Poll question: Which city would you live in?
If you could snap your fingers, rendering money, work, family, and housing not an issue, which of the following cities would you live in and why?

Sure it's expensive and noisy and heavily populated but.....then there's all the great things that make NYC what it is, the people, nightlife, culture, food, shopping, parks, and on and on ......

63. If I were rich, I'd live in NYC.
There is too much temptation shopping-wise here to be poor. Century 21, ABC Home, and Daffy's would render me broke. Not to mention all the restaurants, museums, and other activities. The housing is very expensive (it's expensive in Boston, but you get more for your money). My friends have lived in some real hovels and closets over the year and pay primo $$ to do so. This is probably why NYers go out all the time-most apartments are claustrophobic.

12. Now *that's* a Really Good Question.
The hypothetical is, all other factors aside, if you can pick a place to live, which one do you pick?

How could someone respond to that question with "Crawford, Texas"?

If ever someone had nearly all the obstacles to his choice of residence removed, it's the shrub. So... why Crawford? It's not like W is a believable rancher. He clearly has no more interest in farming than he does geography. Why is he there? Why does he drag foreign dignitaries to Crawford?

I have a picture from a church billboard in Tampa that says, no shit, "Terrorism will not ruin America, Liberalism will." That's the general attitude I encountered in my 4 long months there. I could go on and on about Tampa but I won't.

On edit: USFBull2000, you go to USF? That is probably the most rightwing public university in America. That is definitely why my girlfriend chose not to get her PhD there. I remember reading a story when I lived there about some guy who was trying to start a liberal paper on campus and was facing opposition. Is that you by any chance? For those of you that don't know, USF fired an Arab professor because he was a "terrorist".

7. New York for sure.
I've lived in LA, well Riverside actually (so,so), Tampa (too conservative, too many fundies), and currently south of DC (like it so far). Cleveland's pretty cool (close to friends in Akron, home), visited Austin this summer (very cool place), and have never been to any of the other cities.

Bummer that money, work, family, and housing are still issues. But I don't want to move. I like it here. I like rain. Some people choose to live in deserts. That confuses me. I moved out of the desert southwest to Portland, partly because there is water here. It seems rational to live near water. Cities like Pheonix and Las Vegas are Deep Mysteries to me.

32. Not THAT KIND of "country"
There's plenty of out-in-the-sticks in California,
and some of it is even pretty close to San Francisco.

Flyover country is for flying over,
(or possibly taking the train through if you like trains,
or are a Democratic candidate for high office).

If I were to live in a city, it would be San Francisco
(which was oddly absent from the list, particularly since
you were saying regardless of cost).

My original home town. Full of hell-bent liberals and bookstores. Oh, and the climate is wonderful, and the food is great.

I can't afford it any more, though. The house that sold for $40,000 twenty-five years ago, when I left, is worth over a million today. So much for liberals and environmentalists driving property values down!

Sorry, Atlanta sucks like an Electrolux. It's a hideous, landlocked corporate city with no culture, horrible traffic, noxious air quality, one of the most historically corrupt governments of any US city (although Shirley Franklin is doing a good job), the sorriest excuse for a public transportation system of any comparable city its size, the worst urban planning and most awful sprawl you'll find anywhere outside LA...need I go on? (And I've lived in the Atlanta area since 1986...I think I'm qualified to have an opinion on this...)

I voted for DC, but hey, I already live here! I'd live in downtown DC as opposed to the Virginia 'burbs if DC were better run (the bureaucracy really is a nightmare) and if it were more affordable.

Why DC?

1) I love cities

2) the Library of Congress and the National Archives for my research.

3) The museums!

4) great bookstores and lots of universities which means the used bookstores have good selections beyond romance novels and "God Books."

Now if we can just get a National League baseball team I'll be even happier!

(Thought about a write-in for Cincinnati so I could see my Reds play, but it's too damn republican)

I love DC. I've lived in lots of different parts of the DC Metro. I live in Arlington right now, but my favorite place in the entire area is near Cleveland Park. It's more residential, but still has an urban community feel to it. I lived across the street from Politics and Prose a few years ago (talking about great bookstores in the city), where I once saw Clinton picking out some books. Lots of great art museums, along with the Smithsonians, and DC and Arlington are as Democratic as you get.

62. If I told ya, I'd have ta kill ya
I just spent a year living in the absolute "wildest" place in the lower 48 states. Wolves, grizzly bears, cougers, bobcats, and lynx. A handful of great people. No electricity and few telephones. Beautiful beyond description.

Of course it's in danger of being "loved to death" so I can't tell you where it is. But, if money was no object I'll admit I couldn't resist having a little cabin up there. It's a little too far from civilization to make commuting a reasonable proposition.

I guess I'm not a "city" guy. :)

And, as a pure city experience, I'd take NYC over Portland hands down. But, we're talking about a place to live, and it simply takes too long to get out of NYC to get to the type of wilderness areas, the mountains and the coast that I find myself wanting and needing much of the time. Thus, I give the nod to Portland, my home sweet home.

71. Why do we have to move??? I like where I am...
Asheville, that is. Nowhere else would suit.

Well, maybe Tamps for January; I hate winter passionately.

74. Las Vegas
"What happens here, stays here." My kind of town.

I hesitate to admit this, though. My parents dragged me to Ft. Lauderdale when I was a mere sprout. Then I read that the fastest-growing county in the U.S. was Broward county.

I finally managed to escape to the suburbs of Atlanta. Shortly after I arrived there, I read that the fastest-growing county in the U.S. was now Gwinnett County, Georgia (where I was).

Apparently, a good portion of the population was damned determined to follow me from state to state.

So I went into consulting and lived in nine states over about ten years (just to throw everybody off the track). Then I let the dust settle on me in SW Virginia (where it seems nobody wants to live anymore).

And one fine day, I figure I'll just quietly disappear from here while no one's watching and make my way west. That's the plan. Please don't tell anyone. :-)

79. None of the above...
I hate big city life. I prefer to live in a city with no more than 10-20 thousand people.
