What freaks you out...gives you the heeby-jeebies?
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 09:12 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
Personally, it's usually spiders. I'm not even going to go into it. It can be just pictures. They FREAK me out. Oh and just sound of chainsaws make me lose it. Went to a haunted warehouse one year. The Chainsaw got a LITTLE TOO CLOSE and I ran out of there.
On Edit: I forgot Cornfields. Damn. I never should have watched children of the Corn. Or Signs... Damn you Stephen King! Damn you M. Night Shyalaman!
So, what freaks you out?

34. oh god yes, that's horrible...
I also saw a movie where someone bent over backward and crawled around on hands/feet with his head twisted forward and he just sort of skittered along, chasing someone. It was horrible! Horrible!

I usually like bugs (fascinating to watch, esp. spiders) just so long as they're not on me unexpectedly. Don't mind it if I know a spider or ladybug or something has landed on me - have seen it approach or whatever - but if I look down and there's a bug or something on my leg (even if it's on the jeans or sweater or whatever I'm wearing) I'll jump 20 feet in the air and shriek. Can't seem to control that reaction.

Hate mosquitos, tho. The little buzzing sound they make as they're swooping by your ear freaks me out, I must admit.

You know, that dark that's like a black blanket covering you and and you can't get out? It's like that old question, would you, given the choice, rather be blind or deaf. I think maybe I could adjust to deaf, but blindness is terrifying.

with all its legs slither under a suitcase.

Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 01:24 AM by ailsagirl
track down a doctor (it was late) and determine whether
the bite was serious. Fortunately, it wasn't. But I think I
sprouted a dozen grey hairs after that incident!!

There's a pic of one here:

http://www.whatsthatbug.com/cent.html

It's the fifth photo down... I'd post it here but it's rather
freaky looking.

As to whether they bite... according to this forum:

Do centipedes bite and how big are these suckers?

YES! They bite and it hurts! Been bitten on the arm and the hand and both times the area bitten swelled up
and was sore for a good 24 hours. The last one I saw which was in the garage last week was an easy 6 inches
long and about the width of my baby finger. Suckers are fast too...

Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 09:58 PM by EOO
I'm not kidding, I get seriously freaked out when I get near an edge or a ledge. Especially if it's four or five stories up. I also really HATE climbing up ladders.

Now, to contrast that, I have absolutely no fear of flying whatsoever. In fact, I even go out of my way to request a window seat on a plane. Weird, isnt it?

31. The personification of dogs
Once, as a small child, I was sitting on the front porch early one morning. A dog came walking down the street, walked up the driveway, and down the sidewalk to stand right in front of me. He then made a sound with a tonal inflection reflecting that he was asking me a question, while at the same time shifting his head to one side in a very human manner. It scared the shit out of me and I ran back into the house.

Ever since then, if I see a pic of, for example, a dog wearing an overcoat and hat, I freak.

True story.

72. It's so interesting you mention that
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 01:21 AM by last_texas_dem
because one of my biggest fears is dogs walking on their hind legs, which is quite similar. I used to have recurring nightmares where a pack of dogs would be walking towards me zombie-like, and I would always wake up just before they surrounded me! I had no idea anyone else had this similar fear, but I know exactly where you are coming from!

What's funny is that I love dogs; they are one of my favorite types of animals. So long as they aren't walking on their hind legs towards me and trying to kill me!

My other major fears are looking into mirrors in dark rooms (I turn my head away from the mirror until I can get the light on!), and very intense or dead-looking eyes make me nervous. Dolls, especially porcelain ones, can be pretty creepy because of those fixed eyes.

36. There was this show on, about ten years ago
I think it was an HBO America Undercover, or something -- about ritual satanic abuse. Anyway, the documentary interviewed this couple, who had been accused of ritual satanic abuse of their children, or something -- and these two -- holy shit -- were the scariest fucking people I've ever seen. They looked like hellspawn -- the guy looked like a little imp and had pointy eyebrows, and talked in this really weird high-pitched voice, and the wife looked ultra-creepy, too.

Thinking about that -- in tandem with the Reagan/Bush/Johnny Gosch/Lawrence King stuff freaks me the fuck out.

Also -- sharks. I don't swim in any water that I cannot see through. I used to, but as I get older, I get more paranoid. There are some sick-os out there who could easily dump a freshwater shark -- like a bull shark -- in a lake or something.

That's not so scary, because everyone stands back as the power tools head down the drag strip. I just don't like being anywhere near a radial saw or a table saw that is pluged in. I don't even like to listen to one.

58. Spiders, extreme Christians, churches, broken bones
It's funny, I can watch an operation on TV if it involves soft tissue/organs. But something involving broken bones just makes my skin crawl.

Also, I was hiking and there was a massive overhang over my head. I felt like the entire hillside/cliff would come crashing down on me at any second. My hands were sweating. The people I was with were admiring the caves in the hillside but I booked out of there as fast as I could.

64. Cockroaches
I am utterly phobic of these nasties:

Emphasis on FAST, and yes, they can FLY!
Luckily, they are "normally" outdoor critters, but will come in when it begins to get cold outside.

I can handle any bug. Not roaches. They are...hostile.

81. Tops my list!
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 08:06 PM by op6203
I can't stand those things! My dad had an old storage building in the backyard. It used to be his workshop, then we started using it for storage. Before long it was full of roaches. He decides one Saturday that we are going to all clean it out to sell it (this was years ago). I open the door and they start FLYING everywhere. I didn't know they could fly until that day. And I thought I couldn't hate them anymore...

65. Random Nazis.
Seeing a swastika, a picture of someone in a uniform, or a picture of a Nazi I recognize out of context makes my skin crawl. I can see it on the History Channel, in a book - I own enough books about that stuff - and it's fine, but if it's in a place where I see it by surprise or out of context... ugh.

Also warbirds out of context. I like airshows and will go see vintage planes, and I used to build model airplanes. If one flies overhead when I'm not expecting it, I have to be able to see it and identify it, or I will come very close to panic.

68. Birkas. They make my skin crawl because they make women look non-human.
There was also a pic I saw of a man who'd sewed himself into a bucket seat to get into the U.S. from Mexico. So there was just a seat, with a man's head. It totally creeped me out for the same reason...

71. Tendon cutting
I seen a documentary called "Legendary Sin Cities - Shanghai" http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/sincities/shanghai.html and it described how those with unpaid gambling debts had every tendon in their body cut and then were left for others, in the open, as an example.

I don't know whether to use the scared or puke smiley.
