Cat people -- need help -- cat pissing on bed

Hey all,

My roommate's cat just pissed on my bed. It is some raunchy smelling shit. I was just about to get some shut eye and then I rolled over on to the wet spot. :grr: :grr:

Anyway, I was wondering if someone might be able to help. This is the 3rd time in the last 2 weeks that she has pissed outside of the catbox She has peed on my roommate's bed twice and now mine.

So, WTF? :wtf: Why is she doing this all of a sudden? She is not a kitten (over 2 years old). She is trained to use the catbox.

Is she sick or something?

Also, how does one get cat piss out of a mattress?

2. If she's a trained kitty

and is suddenly urinating in inappropriate places, I'd take her to a vet first.

She may have a urinary tract infection or a kidney infection. What you're describing sounds medical. It could be an emotional response to big change within the household or something like that, but please take her to her vet.

I had a cat like this once. Turned out she had a virus called FIP, a rare but fatal cat-shelter virus. Had to put her down after four months. :cry:

Not that cat with FIP wouldn't pee everywhere, but peeing outside the letterbox usually just mean urinary problems, cystitis, FLUTD, sometimes infection.

She might be sick. They sell this enzymatic odor remover at pet stores that works very well. We had problems with an old cat who became ill, and when we got new kitties, they peed in the same spots, even though we'd steam cleaned them. The enzyme stuff works!

Sometimes they do it for spite. I know poodles do. That's the reason my dog, Dennis, did that at the front door. He would also cock his leg for spite when he didn't get his way.

Btw, I think the cat may have a uti too like the others. A trip to the vet will probably confirm that, assuming the cat is spayed. If the cat is not spayed, that could be "heat". Females will pee on things when going in heat.

7. There's always a reason

As the other posts have mentioned, I agree, you should take her to the vet to rule out any physical ailments. I've had cats with that problem, and there's always a reason for it- either physical or psychological. They seem to like beds for some reason too (One of my cats used to pee on the bed a lot). So, the cat could be sick, or the cat might be upset about something (has anything changed in your household?), or maybe she decided that the bed is an appealing place to pee (I had a cat who suddenly decided she liked peeing on my dog bed). Sometimes they pee outside the litter box if the litter box isn't to their liking too (if it's dirty or in a location they don't like going to). Another thing is that once they start peeing somewhere, they will be drawn to that spot again and again by the odor. It might not smell to you, but the cat can likely smell it, and will pee there over and over, forming a habit. So even if she just got confused and peed their once for no good reason, she might keep going back there just because it smells like the right place to go after having done it once. If she isn't peeing anywhere else in the house besides the bed, it might be more of psychological issue. As far as getting cat piss out of a mattress, that one is beyond me. I'd take the mattress out to the curb and set it on fire. Then when you get a new mattress, put one of those plastic mattress protectors around it, so that if it happens again, at least it won't ruin your mattress. It's a good thing to have around with cats. Anyway, it's an irritating problem, but usually pretty easy to solve- it's just a matter of figuring out what's bothering kitty.

Have you ever smelled cat piss? It is disgusting. All these "miracle" products you speak about to get rid of the smell, you all should know that you are just used to the smell. The smell never goes away. Non-cat people will always smell it. Dwellings with cats always have a smell, it is usually not too bad and most people are too polite to mention it. Kinda like smokers do not realize that they smell like smoke.

If anything gets covered in cat piss it must be thrown about. ESPECIALLY a mattress and bedding.

I am sure there is a shelter that will take the cat. Make sure it is far enough away so your roommate won't think to look there. And tell your roommate that the cat "got out". Problem solved.

It's removed the odor. Even the cats can't smell it, or they'd be pissing in the places where we used the product.

If a pet ever gets sick, or sheds, or doesn't match the new furniture, it's easy to avoid adult responsibility by just dropping it off at the local shelter, right? Or as in this case where the pet belongs to another, just steal the animal, drop it off at a frightening new place, lie to the owner, and go about your business. "Problem solved," as you say. Would that all solutions to problems were so simple. By the way, stealing domestic animals is a felony in many states, in my state punishable by up to six years in prison. But I guess that's not such a big deal, is it?

29. First thing you need to do is shut your door when you're not in that room

I had a problem with one of my cats piddling in the bedroom (docter said health was fine - just nervous about being in a new place). Plus it was through a bedroom window that Evita was able to procure a few clueless songbirds.

So my solution - I close my bedroom door when I'm away for the day. Especially Evita, she likes to pull a towel, blanket, piece of clothing off of the chair or bed and use it as a litter box.

Plus keeping the litter box clean helps a bunch too!

My cat only went outside his litterbox once. I forget what it was, but I did something to piss him off, like going away for the weekend or something. He shit right in the middle of the kitchen floor where he could be sure I wouldn't miss it. Bastard.
