My cat needs a new name.
My daughter brought him home 3 years ago and said his name was Crazy. He doesn't respond to that name, I don't think he likes it. When I call him baby he stops for a minute, then runs off. I think he knows his name, we just haven't guessed it yet. He's coal black, no other color on him, with amber eyes. I'm open to suggestions.

40. I didn't mean that negatively
Although I know that the term "bete noire" idiomatically means something (or someone) that's disliked, literally it just means "black beast."

The old comic strip Gordo had this mischievous black kitten named Bete Noire, and I always thought it was a great name for a playful sprite of a black cat.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that you don't like your cat!

13. Yoshi
In honor of a littermate of two of my cats. The mother was a stray. She had only one eye so we called her "Willie". She had the litter right before she died. There were 4 in the litter. One disappeared. One was named Yoshi. Yogi and Domino were into everything, so the mother cat would drop them off with my aunt and me while she rested. One day she died, and the next day Yoshi was killed, so we took Yogi and Domino in to live inside and to protect them.

15. I've had two black cats, but they were both female.
Sometimes you just have to keep on trying until you hit von the right name. My dog is Sara, and was found as a stray in Ohio. She escaped a death sentence by being transported, with 19 other dogs, via the underground railroad, to rescue organizations in NY and Vt., where we have tougher animal protection laws. My Sara had been scheduled to be gassed...;(

And the name on her paperwork said "Cindy," but that was obviously not her name, since she didn't pay the least bit of attention to it. So I just kept trying names until I hit on "Sara," another Stevie Nicks song, like the name of my remarkable cat, Rhiannon. And, as soon as I called "Sara!" she ran across the room, jumped up into my lap and licked my face. So I found her real name, one that she responds to, and you will too if you just keep trying...:D

25. Thanks snoop, but he's not.
He's shy and gentle. The only time he's scrappy is when another cat tries to bully him. Then he's always turned into a screaming demon. The bully died and he's left with the Original Cat. Old cranky, and lonely since his brother died. Little guy only makes OC bleed when the jerk gets too cranky and attacks him.

46. Our friends' Alpha Cat is named Yoda.
He's grey, with chewed-up ears (he used to be a city feral). He greets all visitors, even at noisy parties, and goes for head-scratches, and then will bite whatever hand pets him.

He often sits on the counter, surveying the party, and looking old and wise (while the other cats scurry around or hide). Absolutely perfect name for this cat.

59. That is so close to my Yoda!
Grey tabby, chunk taken out of one ear, used to be a desert feral (my parents live in a rural area). Very friendly, goes for pets, will then grab the hand and bite it good-naturedly. He's not the alpha, though. Our old, crochety female is the alpha.
