God damn chain stores.
Nobody tends to the hand-fed birds and as a result the birds grow up to be psycho.
Worse, little frigging brats run around and slap their hands on the cage as if's okay thing to do. (it scares the birds...)
Of course, today that had in-building dog training and I'd swear that if you had old geezers around they'd all drop dead from heart attacks when the damn mutts start barking in ajbect protest!
Of course, the dept manager couldn't be bothered. He was too busy being chatty about hunting season, xmas season, and this'n'that with his mommy and daddy. (he looked 30). Now surely the parents, from a more sane generation (or so I used to think) would tell this pompous ass to get to work and earn that big money, but nope.
So I'll be writing them a little letter... they lost a $400+ sale today as one bird was taken with me and I would have bought him with a cage and a blankload of accessories. (if a bird in a pet store takes active interest in you, that means its a new arrival AND interested in you. Impossible to go wrong. (sometimes the long-timer birds will show an interest, but by then they're far more interested in their toys and already have their psychoses learned from that inhospitable environment.)
Petco was almost as bad.

1. what kind of bird was it? |
|
you could always go buy the cage and accessories somewhere else and then go back and buy the bird if it was a good deal.

I'd rather not give those filth a damn dime, but I haven't exactly been adamant in my mindset either... plus she'd deserve a good home.
The bird herself was $199 and utterly adoreable...
I might. But I want to check the one remaining mom'n'pop store first, even if they cost more.

28. As sociopathic as conures? |
|
I had a vicious conure, but I blamed it on her being abused by her former owner (I was given the bird by the owner's girlfriend, who said that the guy would reach into the cage, grab the bird, and yell "shut up!" when it started squawking in the morning)

Go give the little thing a home, get the cage and trappings somewhere else.

I went to one in St. Cloud, and they had excellent service. They even treated their animals quite well, if I remember correctly.

When I'm in the pet stores I want to get all the birdies. Go back and get the little sweetie you had your heart set on. :loveya: Bird shouldn't suffer because of stupid humans. :(
Some pet stores really suck, you have these little unsupervised brats(and their parents) who don't know how to pick up the birds and end up scaring the dickens out of the birdies. :(

15. The one time Petco had decent birds... |
|
the employee left a few months later out of disgust.
She knew her stuff and the company had treated her like, well, bird shit.
So, yeah, I am sickened by corporate actions. They want all and give nothing for compensation.
I'm about to return everything I recently bought and buy solely food and clothing as needed. Maybe the career-oriented stuff as well, which is graphics design and photography stuff...

|
of course this isn't proven, but...
That Petco has "death rooms" where they take sick animals to die instead of getting them veterinary care. I haven't stepped foot in a petco since I heard that just in case it's true.

14. Well, I'm no PETA fanatic but there is an easy & inexpensive solution here |
|
All I'd ask is that they get somebody to take proper care of the birds and give them a counterbalance. This would keep them friendly until a proper owner would buy it.
I mean, they can leave the wild ones alone (apart from food and water, a 4 minute task), no harm in that... but for the pricey hand-fed birds, such neglect not only hurts the birds, it also hurts the salesperson trying to get the bird out of the cage and ultimately the very store trying to sell the thing. The birds I saw today will NEVER be bought. Or returned fairly quickly if they were. Those birds, I fear, are destined to be DESTROYED. And the store is out the money they *cough* INVESTED too.
I'm talkin' RESPONSIBLE profiteering. That's what all of us in "Small Business 101" get taught. When did the big chains take the same course - NEVER?!
Besides, the cards outside the cages say hand-fed birds are tame and friendly, yet the birds in those stores are frequently going nuts and some becoming VIOLENT (I got royally bitten today by a bird who otherwise was BEGGING for attention as it would come near to me and be ever so friendly and cute) because they don't have a stable situationto live in. Strangers coming in and out all the time is not the bird way, particularly when little children go banging on the glass just to get the already-frightened bird's attention!!! They live in flocks with familiar routines. They are put into a situation of chaos, so it's no wonder they go mad!

no doubt -
and its not only birds.
damn, its really heartbreaking when you think about it - the psychological trauma these animals are put thru at the expense of the bottom line. And that's why they're not in the environments you suggest - its profit. They're walmart plastic crap with a bow on them for all the company's intents.

21. And these big chains treat their workers like animals too. |
|
Low wages. Part time only so they can duck all sorts of benefits and other dignities. Personality profiling mechanisms to weed out what the computer thinks is not good enough for them. Credit checks to determine if the would-be employee will be a thief (whatever, some people in debt want a second job so they can pay things back  )

18. That's where I went for my adoptive kitten - thier "service is bad" |
|
I was expecting to pick her up the same day but since they adopt them from pets in need I have to wait untill the store until I get her. Note one how is paying for a cat adoption? Note two they shouldn't allow kids to walk in and bang on the cat cages or any of the animals. Note three the kitty will be here on nov 2nd allthough my mom is driving me down an hour a day for to spend time with her and make sure she's fed. I really hate podunk towns.

22. Their cavalier treatment of fish is just as bad |
|
The one across the street from my store sells, among other things, painted fish (you paint a fish in one of two ways--you can either soak it in a chemical that strips the fish's slime coat then soak it in dye, or inject the dye into the fish. Both are bad.), channel catfish and pacu. They don't sell an aquarium that will actually hold either a channel cat or a pacu.
Then they recommend keeping the channel cats in tropical community aquariums. A channel cat is a cool-water predator that in the wild feeds almost exclusively on good-size gamefishes.

They donate a lot to Republicans. I'm not surprised they don't care about their animals. I try to avoid that place. Thats sad about the parrots. Parrots are especially social animals, they need a lot of TLC.

25. About a month ago, I was in Petsmart, and all their finches , lovebirds, |
|
and parakeets looked like hell. They all seemed to suffer from labored breathing, and they weren't tweetering around as usual.
When I went in a week later, they had entirely different birds in stock. Something tells me they weren't all sold... :(

29. PetSmart is great in our area |
|
THe dog training is far away from the bird area and there always seems to be an employee doing something with the birds when I'm in there. Plus they have been quite generous helping the no-kill cat rescues in the state providing a space to set up adoption.
