Any good medications to fight post-nasal drip?
I seem to do okay fighting colds & runny noses, but then I get killed with post-nasal drip. I used to use a medication called Tavist-D, but that got pulled from the market. I also used to use Robitussin Night Relief, but I can't find that one anymore, either.

Anything else I can use, as I already have a nasty sore throat because of it.

And, I do gargle with warm salt water, but that seems only temporary.

Thanks

2. There are many things that do it
Look at what symptoms will be treated on the cold medicine box. Any drug that will dry up your runny nose will also stop the post-nasal drip and thereby stop the sore throat. You will have to experiment to find out what works best for you. I tend to use cheap CVS knock-offs of popular commercial remedies which are about half the price, retail.

They basically split into daytime and nightime drugs, because true antihistimines tend to make one drowsy, and are most effective in drying out the mucous membranes. Some cold medicines, however, can make me feel pretty stoned and disoriented, so I don't use them unless I really, really need them.

Read all the active ingredients on the boxes, too. After awhile, you will see which ones work best for you.

The over-the-counter medication phenylpropanolamine (PPA) has been withdrawn from the market following a November 6, 2000 Food and Drug Administration health advisory. PPA is a stimulant which constricts peripheral blood vessels, including those in nasal passages. For this reason, it is used as a decongestant in numerous cold and allergy remedies, including Dimetapp and Tavist D. It is also the primary ingredient in the OTC weight loss medications Dexatrim and Acutrim. In the years 1969 to 1991 the FDA received 22 reports of PPA associated hemorrhagic stroke, bleeding into the brain or into tissue surrounding the brain. Sixteen of those cases were associated with phenylpropanolamine in appetite suppressants and 6 with PPA in cough and cold remedies. As a result, the FDA sought out more information to determine what risks PPA might pose to the general public.

Hmmmm, Dimetapp was great, worked for our daughter when she was young.

6. My GP gave me a sample of Flonase.
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 10:14 PM by Rhiannon12866
It's a nasal spray. She said it may not appear to be working, at first, so to give it a few days. I have a prescription for it, if it works. And I understand what a pain this is. I keep needing to blow my nose and am coughing...:-(

7. From what I read around here, marijuana cures everything.
Cancer, colds, pneumonia, nausea, allergies, neuralgia, psychoses, schizophrenia, depression, the heartbreak of psoriasis, heart disease, oil shortages, the shortage of good rope, war, economic depression, and the greenhouse effect.

It also improves the texture and flavor of brownies.

Of course, I don't know these things from experience. It's just what I read.
