Just got back from seeing the worlds first screening of A Scanner Darkly
Saw it at the Angelica Theater in Houston.

I love this movie and think it will get a lot of attention. Its done in that sort of animation you can see in a couple of TV commercials, where it looks like they started with real film and animated it. I was wondering if I'd get tired of watching animation, but this is different.

Anybody heard anything about it?

2. They shot it on digital video and animated it, actually
The director, Richard Linklater, used the same technique for his film Waking Life. They have a making of featurette thing on the dvd of taht film. I'm really stoked for A Scanner Darkly.

3. I've been looking forward to this for a good while
Channel 4 did a documentary on Linklater last year & had a preview of the film and it looked great. The technique really worked well for the dream-like quality of "Waking Life" (which ends with a great monologue about Philip K Dick) & I'm curious to see how it transfers for a more straightforward film.

he never told me that it was getting screened so soon.... I thought they were still working on it.

A LOT of work went into this movie, let em tell you.. I am interested to see how it turned out. Can you say that the "animation" helped further the plot????

10. Yes, they said it still had some tech work to be done and
that we might notice, also some unfinished business with the soundtrack. But I am not tecnically astute enough to have noticed where.

And yes, I think that they animation definitely furthered the plot. Throughout the movie I kept noticing when the animation looked more and less like reality - I think different lighting makes a difference in this respect. I havent abused any substances (D or otherwise) in a very long time, but I could imagine that it could feel sort of like that.

6. This is one of my favorite books
But I'm really worried about the casting of Keanu Reeves.

Shuddering just thinking about it...

8. Really? I actually think Keanu is scarily perfect for it.
Seriously, Bob Arctor is pretty much Keanu's only character - kinda quiet and brooding. Keanu might suck, but this is probably a good role for him.

11. I don't pay that much attention to Hollywood personalities
so I'm not really in on why everyone I talk to seems to hate KR, but I will say that he did quiet and brooding real well.

9. Oooh I'm glad to hear it's good.
I was worried they'd screw it up.

Thanks for the info! :hi:

12. The book freaked me out and I dread the movie
Did they get the increasing level of paranoia right?

(When AVH made me read it, I told her I wanted to take my brain out and scrub it clean - with a wire brush and bleach).

Dick was brilliant, I just don't believe movies can do him justice (they haven't yet). But I'll give it a try.

(I'd love to see VALIS filmed but don't believe anyone could do it well. "Why did my cat die?" "Because your cat was stupid")

Khash.
