That will be all. Thanks for letting me get it off my chest.

3. Why does a dual 3.2 GHz Xeon running RHEL grinds to a halt
every 50th time or so I run a stupid script that runs a stupid, minuscule query through sql*plus?

MySQL doesn't give me any of this bullshit.

5. Well, it is, but its stupidity should be a good thing.
It runs the following utilities in order, and only once each:

echo
cut
date
cat
sqlplus
grep
rm

It. Makes. No. Sense.

19. exactly
It's the programming that's the issue - not the DB.

11. I seriously doubt that, dude
I've never heard of a Republican-supporting IT company.

Even Microsoft, who are beyond question the most evil company yet in the history of IT, donate equally to the Democratic and Republican parties.

16. It's sad but true, look here
I know, Republican IT companies are rare, but Oracle is one that is overwhelmingly Republican. According to BuyBlue.org, Oracle's campaign contributions were 96% Republican! Disgusting. 10. Oracle is a fucking brilliant database
as far as I know there's nothing to touch it.

Their Windows development tools are absolutely ghastly, especially Reports. But the database itself is cool. I wouldn't want to develop a major enterprise database using any other RDBMS.

So it doesn't run very well on a home computer - even a very good one. Well no shit sherlock! It isn't fucking meant to! :eyes:

12. Having used Oracle & SAP
I prefer SAP. Granted, I was more an end-user, so I liked the versatility of the SAP system better, but I did create quite a few Oracle reports and coordinated a project to create a big SAP report. SAP seemed a lot quicker, too, but I'm guessing it's because the data is spread across many different cubes... so, reconciling between the cubes can be a major pain in the ass.

14. All I can say is I've used Oracle at four different jobs now
I've used versions 7, 8i, 9i and 10g and it runs fine. Yes you do need to run it on a powerful machine, but if you're running any sizeable database you are going to have a powerful machine. I certainly take umbrage at it being called a piece of shit when it manifestly isn't.

If you're having difficulty on a machine that should be quite up to the job required of it then you have some problems that aren't necessarily the fault of Oracle. If you're using Oracle commercially then you've bought a licence (you're right, it is expensive) so you should be entitled to some support. Ask for it.

18. Oracle is fine.. it's the programming to use it that sucks
the database is the best. But programmers need to write user friendly code to use it. That's where the problem lies IMHO.
