Poll question: Most hated tv commercial or PSA |
|
PSA is Public Service Announcement, in case anybody doesn't know. My own current least fave is the one with the kid whose mom is "trippin' about weed." The big payoff is that because she was so firm, he turns down a drag the next time it's offered. And I'm always thinking, "...and when he gets home and she can smell it on him, she'll just know psychically that he didn't actually smoke anything." Yeah, I know, I watch too much tv and obsess about it too much. Sue me. :P
I note in passing that these are heavily represented on the nerd channels (Discovery, Science, History, A&E, etc); those without cable may be fortunate enough not to have to put up with some of them.
Now it's your turn to rant!

1. That damned car commercial with the stupid clowns... |
|
Who the heck thought THAT was a way to get people to buy a car? It wouldn't even get a kid who loves clowns to want their car!
That commercial's a "three-puker", to be sure! :puke: :puke: :puke:
B-)

4. That one's a serious head scratcher for sure |
|
It was so vague, that I made sure to really pay attention the next time I saw it. Maybe that was what they were going for, heck, I remember the product, something I know they go for. But I still have no desire whatsoever to buy a Saturn, they need a hotrod and/or a car with at least some personality to its looks.

12. Toby Keith/Ford - "Look Again" |
|
I don't know if this is nationwide, but it is played almost non-stop here.
Toby Keith standing in some feild with a guitar singing "if you haven't seen a ford lately, look again." Somewhere in this he's driving one of these pickups and, with the cowboy hat and sunglasses, grins as he drives by the camera.
Over and over again.
Bleach.

I haven't seen it in a while , but the drug/terra connection really bugged me. Went sort of like this....
2 guys talking -- "if you use drugs, you support terrorists I do not --- yes you do --- I do not ----you do too" or something along those lines.
When I saw it for the first time, my husband turned to me and said, oh my gosh are they gonna fess up about Ronnie/Contras/Cocaine?

for me to like or dislike. I mean--why would being raised by wolves make it so you won't enjoy a Quiznos sub? I had a Quiznos sub once and I didn't really care for it. I wasn't raised by wolves.
The guy I'm inventing for the purpose of this comment was in fact raised by wolves. He swears by Quiznos--or at least did until they launched their vicious attack ads that unfairly portray people who were raised by wolves.

66. Anti-drug spot with some abortion refernces kicked in... |
|
Also, it first ran during the Super Bowl of 2002, I think. Another Bushevik kickback to chums (unreported in Corporate TV Pravda but as the bottom line of a Style Section article) in which the Imperial Family through their Privy Purse (which used to be the Treasury of the Old United States) kicked some $7 million to Faux for running the spot in spite of the fact that PSAs are supposed to be given for free?
Of course, what is really the Rule of Law to the genetically and morally superior Imperial Family of Amerika? :puke: :puke: :puke:
A to the actual content of this odious commercial...
A series of kids deadpanning lines:
"I helped kill a judge" "I helped blow up a building." "I helped assassinate a government official" "It my body, I can do what I want with it."
and so forth, culminating in the distinct message that if you use drugs, you are helping terrorists.
Now, I am not big fan of hardore narcotics, but this is the most odious propaganda...much worse than showing the flatline brainwaves of a coma victim and pretending it was what happens when you smoke a joint.

That damned Army recruitment ad seems to run all the time on cable. In fact, it ran twice during the Japanese news on International Channel this morning. It shows young guys doing MAAAANLY things like climbing onto helicopters and enjoying excellent sports facilities. It makes the Army seem like The Boy's Own Jolly Good Adventure Story.
If I had multimedia skills, I could make a really wicked Flash animation (calling Symbolman and American Stranger!) using the soundtrack of that ad with combat footage from Iraq.

The nextel commercials drive me up the wall using walkie talkies to get married, have a business meeting, no, that's just too stupid. The geico commercials especially the one with the broad asses woman running down the street to pick her kid up, damn I know it's just a character, but I'd love to dope slap that woman. The gap commercial, all clean cut, probablly would love lawerence welk's america, the woman in or near thirty hanging out with twenty somethings. I still like the aflac duck though.

56. Oh, I have a couple... |
|
I can't stand the marijuana PSA's. I can tolerate the 'enforcer mom' better than I can the others actually. The terrorist one was awful, but I haven't seen that one in a long time. My current least favorite is the one where the guys are getting stoned in a fast-food drive thru and pull out and hit the little girl going by on her bike. Also, I just saw an ad the other day where a toddler is going off by herself to a pool and it says something like "explain to her parents that you were smoking weed instead of watching her". :wtf:
My husband's least favorite is the ad for some kind of flu medicine that shows the mom in bed so dad's in charge, and he lets the kids go off to school in beach summer gear during a snowstorm and he's walking around all confused in the kitchen... and so on. He says it offends him.
Also, I can't help but feel appalled when I see commercials for the video game Desert Storm II - Back to Baghdad.

I don't hate the enforcer ads. I liked the one with the punked out kid getting ready to leave and the parent asking questions before he left. The message was something like "Let Your Kids be who they are, but know where they are and what they are doing". I also always hated the "this is your brain on drugs" one, but liked the heroin version with the girl trashing the kitchen with the frying pan.

|
It shows a wedding in a small town in India (I'm assuming) with a parade of horses, dancers, and a carriage with the couple. From the other direction comes a Range Rover. Everyone stops. Then the bride signals for the RR to go first. Then, across the screen, comes the word "Respect". :puke: , I can't think of anything MORE disrespectful than ruining tradition with a fuckin' SUV.
