Greatest soul crooners?
I don't think I have enough experience in this sort of thing since I was born in the 70's and thereby missed the golden age of soul music, but lately I have been getting more and more into the likes of Al Green and Sam Cooke.

I think it is called soul music because it comes from and speaks to the soul.

Who else should I be listening to?

3. I'll check him out
Luther is always popular but since he really hit in the eighties I didn't give him much of a chance. In the eighties I was more into faster, harder stuff.

I guess I am mellowing with age..?

12. He didn't live long enough to make a bad album
The Soul Album, Live in Europe, Otis Redding Blue, King and Queen (with Carla Thomas), etc...there's also a greatest hits album on Rhino which might be best if you're just discovering him. You really can't go wrong with any of his albums.

Please check her stuff out.

She's from Detroit (Rock City) and I enjoy her immensely.

She has a CD out now called, "Sunday Morning Music" on Sub Pop record label, I believe. You can get it at Tower Records on-line.

She was recently featured in Martin Scorcese's Blues series on PBS.

She is outstanding LIVE!

On edit: She was not featured in Scorcese's Blues series, but rather as an addendum to the series I saw on the local affiliate of PBS.

17. Try some various-artists collections

The Rhino label has an excellent four-volume series called, "Soul Shots." I particularly recommend the first three volumes. (Volume 4 is all blues. Why Rhino included it in the "Soul Shots" series is anyone's guess.)

Also on Rhino is an awesome six-CD set called, "Beg, Scream and Shout: The Big Ol' Box of '60s Soul." It even comes in a box that resembles a casefor hauling 45 RPMs around.

On Rhino again is the 20-volume series, "Didn't It Blow Your Mind: Soul Hits of the '70s," as well as a five-CD boxed set titled, "Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience."

For more information on '60s and '70s soul music, you might want to check out my website: http://home.comcast.net/~soulexpress4

I'm not familiar enough with their entire catalogs to make album recommedations but I'm sure there are good compilations available for both of them...

27. One Of The Most Moving Performance I Can Recall......
...was Marvin Gaye doing an acapello rendition of the National Anthem (with a little bit o' soul added) before the NBA All-Stars Game. The crowd LOVED it, and he made it seem so personal....

He was one of the greatest.

29. I have it on MP3 ..............

and it is great, unlike any performance of the national anthem that i've ever heard......i've seen video footage of the performance and it was cool seeing the players reactions as they stood listening to it, big smiles all around, especially Pat Riley ..........

25. How deep into the well do you want to go?
Soul Music is bottomless, you know.

I'm with everybody who recommends Marvin Gaye. Get "Let's Get It On" and "Sexual Healing."

While you're at it, pick up "Al Green's Greatest Hits" (or whatever they're calling it these days.) Reverend Green re-wrote the book much the same way that Marvin did.

"Hot Buttered Soul" and "Black Moses" by Isaac Hayes are home runs, too.

If you want to get way Old School, pick up anything by The Impressions (with or without Jerry Butler). If "People Get Ready" does not lift you up, you are too far gone to save.

Brook Benton and Dusty Springfield are also worth a listen.

Enjoy!

I :loveya: me some Soul Music!
