North Norfolk abbatoir set to close

A long-established family-run abattoir in North Norfolk is to stop slaughtering this month.

G Bush and Son, of Upper Staithe Road in Stalham, which employs more than 20 staff, is one of the few remaining multi-species abattoirs in the country.

But now the grandson of the firm's founder has decided it is too expensive to carry on and will now be just a cutting plant and meat depot.

The news is a blow for local meat producers and butchers.

Peter Bush, who runs the Stalham plant, said the decision to stop slaughtering animals was designed to save on costs incurred through health and safety regulations.
