Man Dies After Winning Vodka Drinking Contest
<snip>

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A vodka-drinking competition in a southern Russian town ended in tragedy with the winner dead and several runners-up in intensive care.

"The competition lasted 30, perhaps 40 minutes and the winner downed three half-liter bottles. He was taken home by taxi but died within 20 minutes," said Roman Popov, a prosecutor pursuing the case in the town of Volgodonsk.

"Five contestants ended up in intensive care. Those not in hospital turned up the next day, ostensibly for another drink."

4. Wow....
I wonder how he felt in his last moments. With that much liquor in me I'd prolly be thinking "Ok... I think I'm dying but I can't really tell... and laying down seems like a fun idea."

Poor guy.

7. I knew a guy who beerbonged grain alcohol once
My first of many years in college I pretty sure he was suicidal. He obviously passed out and no one found him for a few days (the place was empty on weekends) he was lucky.

No this doesn't sound liek a very good idea sort of like playing catch with a rattlesnake (Darwin "winner") or putting them in your mouth (thread here earlier).

11. This happened to a old school pal's son
Part of a hazing in college a couple years ago. And I thought this kind of stupidity ended years ago. His son died as a result. How horrible.

I don't usually abbreviate "LOL," but that's indeed what you have me doing!

I should add that I am not laughing at the deceased's fatal misfortune, but at the dunderheadedness of this entire contest.

:hi:

14. I remember college
I lived in the dorms one summer, and one guy drank so much he barely survived. If he hadn't puked all over the place when he did and then been taken away by paramedics he wouldn't have made it.

Every parent sending their kids off to college should let them know that alcohol poisoning can kill you or leave you brain dead, and then acquaint them with how many drinks will do it.

22. Keep the body away from open flames,
actually, in the 7th grade we had a boy kill himself that way. Poisoned himself with a quart of 100 proof vodka, which he downed in under 20 minutes, according to the police. By the time his buddies realized he was in real trouble, it was too late. He expired in the ambulance as I recall.

27. I Saw The Exact Same Thing Back in the 70's
I was in a bar near a naval training station back in around 1975. There were young sailors and some local civilians playing some drinking game near the pinball machines. (My friends and i were playing pinball.)

One of the young sailors was "still in the game" after about 15 or 20 shots. This guy was about my size, which was probably 135 pounds at the time.

About 20 minutes after we went back to our table, there was a big commotion back at the table where the drinking game was going on. We went over there and the young sailor was lying face down and wasn't breathing. My friends and i told them to turn him over so we could check his airway. It was clear. Then, a couple of the sailors starting doing mouth to mouth. By the time the ambulance got there, (probably only 3 or 4 minutes), there was no saving him.

I read in the paper a few days later that he had died of "alcoholic insult to the brain." Same thing that killed Dylan Thomas. He was 20.

Since i saw that, i knew that drinking until the pass-out stage was a VERY bad idea.
The Professor
