Staring Death in the Face, Part Two: Phyllis Schafly
I'm going to go see another speaker with whom I'll never agree on anything tonight at a neighboring school. Phyllis Schafly will be delivering an address on how feminism is inconsistent with reality.

I'll be sure to bring back a full battle report. :-)

1. World class homophobe...in spite of having a gay son.
God, yet another in a line of hateful, Republican neandethal women (Ann Coulter's mentor).

Well...I would say "enjoy seeing her", but the word "enjoy" can't possibly be used when describing Phyllis Schafly.

3. Here's a great line to use on her
Get a guy to say it, if you're not male.

Tell her that because she's a woman, she has some nerve standing up and telling others what to do. What about her family? Why isn't she at home cooking and cleaning? How dare she think that she has something to say to men? Then tell her to go home, put on an apron, shut up, and sit down.

I've always wanted to do that. This is my dh's idea, btw.

6. This is very important
When she first started her mega campaign against the woman's movement, she was very big on the traditional role of woman as wife, mother, homemaker.

But she herself never was.

I think some tried to call her on this glaring inconsistency, but she refused to answer.

The woman who was IA atty gen (RoXanne ???) in the 70s and ran for gov (and got smashed by attacks on her husband .... like G Ferraro) challenged Shafley to debate several times...Shafley always refused; she knew she couldn't hold her own against someone with wit and intelligence.

Her book A Choice not an Echo .... was it for Goldwater???

4. I saw her once
I saw her once on a debate in college with Sarah Weddington (attorney in the Roe v. Wade case). This was over a decade ago.

Unrelated to that, we had a fellow in my dorm floor who had a signed poster of her (I think it was on his wall or something). College Republicans type. Very freaky.

Also unrelated, she and one of her sons are anti-vaccinationist nutters.

7. She lives a life completely inconsistent with her rhetoric...
Edited on Wed Nov-19-03 07:24 PM by jchild
She had nannies, housekeepers, servants to take care of her kids when they were ittle bittie babes, while she toured the world giving anti-feminist speeches and proponing the merits of housewifery.

She is in everyway a contradiction to what she preaches. I would like to know why in her mind she feels free to violate the mores she dictates to all other women.

I hate the bitch. If it weren't for her, ERA would have passed easily. She and her Eagle Forum ended that. May she burn in hell...

8. Phyllis Schafly IS a feminist.
What else could she be, but a feminist given her accomplishments?
