Poll question: I'm Moving the Family Away From Sweaty Hellhole Miami |
|
So where should I move them to?
I work as an English-Japanese translator/graphic artist right now...
The wife is Japanese and misses the Japanese community in CA and Japan.

All places in the world have seasons.
They're just not as easily differentiatable in Hawaii as they are in, say New England.
But they are. I mean, summer, it's like 85 degrees and sunny, and winter, it's like 82 and sometimes rainy.
Plus different flowers are in bloom in the winter.
The tradewinds blow differently.
And winter bikinis are a bit larger. :-)

10. You will actually find lots of opportunities here as a Japanese translator |
|
throw in the graphic arts skills and any of the half-dozen or so throwaway visitor magazines would snap you up, no questions asked. Heck, with that background, you might even be able to score a coveted job on a Neighbor Island like Maui!
The missus will appreciate the many local-style Japanese restaurants (even a couple of teahouses!), Japanese-language TV and so on. Most of that kind of stuff is here on O'ahu, but Hilo on the Big Island has a formal Japanese garden in a public park, and the world's only society devoted to the study of a particular obscure Japanese verse form (that's right, there are none left in Japan!)
Climate: Each island functions like sort of a mini-continent. Wanting to escape sweaty hellholes? On O'ahu, head mauka (toward the mountains) to areas like Manoa, Nu'uanu, or (less expensively) Palolo or Kalihi Uka. Or, clear across the Pali to the Windward side, to places like Kane'ohe, and Ahuimanu with its replica of a Kyoto Buddhist temple.
It's a rare day that I run across a fellow DUer who actually has the right skill set to make it here in the islands! Do, please, give us a thought. And remember, we're the place that made Bush* go to his fancy fundraiser at the Hilton through the service entrance!!!!

Canada will let you in with a skill like that! They need translators, and B.C. in general, and Van in particular, is very aware of its membership in the Pacific Rim community. Not only that, but it's an amazing, gorgeous place.

You'll LOOOOOVE the weather in January.;-)
No but seriously, this city has one of the fastest-growing economies in the nation, a great education system, and housing is the most bang-for-the-buck. You can buy a brand-new mansion on the grounds of a golf course for 250,000 dollars. Seriously, I'm not kidding. Our economy is VERY diversified, with computer technology, medical technology and care and education being our biggest industries. Manufacturing (steel, modular construction) is booming as well, as well as the chain service industries. We have the most chain restaurants per-capita in the entire world.
We're a rapidly-growing city of 100,000 people, with over 180,000 people in the metro area and growing. I don't think you'll like the weather, though. We've been growing, but we've managed to not get too many people coming in who bitch about the weather.
A LOT of Texans are moving here for some reason.

8. What about searching out cities where the big Japanese car plants |
|
have located? They usually have a nice little Japanese community in usually affordable cities.

Four years ago I gave Miami a go. I figured I earned the warm weather after 7 years in Seattle. Six months passed with nary a job interview, so I cut my losses and headed back to DC. I'd have preferred New Zealand, or a few countries in Europe, or even Aussie. But that's another story.

Carlos needs out in the worst way.
My husband was so desperate to leave Miami after two years that he moved to Chicago in December. We met a month later and the rest is infamy.
