I just recieved the God-damndest thing:

OK, I live in a college dorm at a regular, secular public university. So just now, I was just watching TV (South Park) at low level, when I heard a knock on my door. (I live in a single room, BTW) I said "Who is it???" and I saw a note slipped below the door that said "Quiet Hours: 10:00pm to 10:00am".

OK, SO WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BULLSHIT???!!! I was just watching TV, minding my own goddamn business like I always have!!! What, now I can't fucking watch TV for the reat of the night???!! This NEVER happened on any other night, and I've been here for almost three months. So what the hell is up with this???!!! This isn't fucking SUMMER CAMP. I pay money to sleep in this room. I haven't been any more loud than I usually am. So what's the deal???

1. Your RA
must be one fricking prick if he/she did that. There is only one RA like that here at my university.

9. I've got some, but the wire isn't long enough.
I could only sit RIGHT IN FRONT of my TV if I wanted to use them.

10. You can buy an extension.
Male on one end, female on the other.
(No, I'm not turning this into a sex thread)

You might have to look around a bit, but they do make them.

keep doing what you were doing. If they give you crap, give them crap. I never listen to my RA's when I am watching tv and they say it's too loud WHEN IT'S NOT.

4. Don't know why somebody would think to complain now
But in my dorm the walls are really thin. I can hear people in the room next to mine just having a regular conversation through the wall.

5. When I was at UCA
the rule for noise disturbances was, during quiet hours, you should not be heard more than one door down. Where do you attend college, if you don't mind me asking?

There's a few real Nazi-esque policies here, don't get me started. For example, the rule that's being protested by students about no alcohol WHATSOEVER by ANYONE (including donating alumni, or "Team Makers") during pre-game tailgating at football games. Most people I know here are really cool, though. The awesome people I've met outweigh the policies by a few bastards out on a power trip.

You know about Morris??? We only have like 1200 people here. Yeah, our football team did alright. We won 5 games this year! :wow: I wish we'd continue the losing streak, though, because that got us our fame.

13. Aw heck, I watched TV until 1 or 2 AM
And nobody ever complained to me about it. I had my volume at like, 10 or 12 (out of 63).

Then again, I always seemed to get floormates who enjoyed throwing loud parties at 3 AM the night before finals, so maybe they just didn't care. Quiet hours were meaningless.

14. Haha
Was the TV loud? I would just turn the TV down. You can have it really low and still hear it very well at night. That is how I watch Cartoon Network late at night.

Worse things happen here. A few nights ago two girls were running up and down the hall laughing at 3 AM like some little kids. I was so pissed.

15. my rights, my rights
Maybe, as another poster pointed out, the walls are paper thin and someone is trying to get some sleep. You ask why now? Well, maybe because they've ignored it as long as they could and they're just not willing to ignore it anymore.

Someone is obviously bothered by it enough that you were reminded of the quiet hours. The graceful and considerate thing to do is to turn off the TV and as someone else suggested, get an extension so you can watch TV without bothering anyone else.

No offense, but your ire over this reminds me of how a freeper would react. "My rights." "My rights." It's always about them and their rights; it's never about considering impact of their actions on other people.

Cher

18. It's something they have to learn to deal with.
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 01:48 AM by Rashind
Noise is a fact of life. What happens if you're in a real city with a real apartment and your walls are paper thin and you ask your neighbor to turn down his TV, which is at a reasonable volume, because you can't sleep with it on? You get hit in the goddamned face with a bullet or baseball bat.

You can't always have the luxury of absolute silence, and you shouldn't have the luxury of setting your neighbors' bedtimes. Deal.

On edit: changed my real HTML tag to the fake one that works.

16. Go stand in the hall. Can you hear it? If yes, it's too loud.
If you can hear it through your door, you can hear it through the wall.

3 things: Pick up a thriftstore quilt and tack it to the wall with a pretty hanging facing out and covering it. Alternately, pick up a couple of sheets of styrofoam at the lumberyard and tack those to the wall for additional soundproofing. Cover with something attractive so the RAs don't get pissy.

Get a headphones extension or a set of wireless headphones. Heck, if you'll reimburse me for the shipping, I'll send you mine (they hurt my ears because I wear glasses.)

Turn off the sub-woofer and or the tweeter. High and low pitches carry where other sounds don't.

Politicat (who lived in a 14 story dorm with the basketball team above and the football team below.... on the honors floor. :eyes: Thus she learned a lot about soundproofing. )

17. I had noisy neighbors every year except, soph
We voted on quiet hours in the dorm. The choices were 9, 10, 11, or 12. 12p.m. always won because the earlier votes were always split. I often wanted to sleep before then or at least wind down. If I needed to study after 10 p.m., I sure as heck wanted to be in my room and not having to hike across campus late at night. My freshman year, there were several noisy people including my room mate who I wanted to beat up several times. My junior and senior year, I had a noisy neighbor next door (different person both years) and that was the only noisy person on the entire floor. I wished there had been a living option that involved a quiet floor or dorm. When I mean noisy, I don't mean like your watching television. I mean their stereos are up full blast. Sometimes they exceeded the 12 p.m. curfew. My senior year, I started taking revenge by blasting classical music at her.

24. Go to your hall government meeting for once
If you had you could have fixed the quiet hours at the beginning of the year.

But yeah, your RA was a jerk for not saying that to your face.

25. I lived in an apartment...
where some guy upstairs and a few doors down kept complaining. I had the sound down to where I could barely hear it, but he still bitched. No one else did, though.

Near as I could figure out, the speakers sent some kind of harmonic vibration through the walls. and he got it. They were on shelves attached to the wall.

That, and he was an annoying prick anyway.

I would discuss this with the complainer. Depending on the results of the discussion, keep the sound low at night, or get headphones. The wireless headphones work pretty well, but I've made "extensions" by snipping the headphone cord and splicing in cheap telephone wire (the one with four wires in it) to make a 30' cord.
