Whatever Happened to Pipe Smokers? |
|
I realize most pipe smokers these days use a slightly different tobacco variant than those from the past, but still, whatever happened to the old-timer pipe smokers?
When I was a kid, I always thought it was rather inviting, unlike cigarettes or cigars. I haven't seen anyone smoke a pipe in years!

1. The only one I ever loved...died. |

My grampa smoked a pipe. You're right - it didn't smell anything like cigarettes or cigars. It smelled kind of spicy and warm.
My grampa's been gone 28 years, but I can still almost smell the pipe.

2. It has much to do with the times, where can you smoke it? |
|
It is a practiced art, slow burning and meant to be enjoyed, not just a quick hit of nicotine like ciggy and cigar smokers. When I first started smoking ( I no longer do) I LOVED the taste and smell of the different pipe tobaccos. But when you were at work, no one wanted you around them. When the indoor bans took effect in the 90's, you never had time to enjoy it. hence, it is disappearing.

I don't do it as often as I should, since I often don't think of it, but it's the most relaxing thing in the world...
We need more pipe smokers, and places to smoke them.

A heady aroma I always equated with the quintessence of manliness. I mean, one whiff and it transported you into a wood-panelled den stocked with a library of hard-bound books where men sat around and pondered weighty concepts.
Anyway, some unrelated trivia:
This is the first post I ever started, and the first discussion I've ever been involved in that garnered more than 1 reply! Whoo hoo! I'm on a roll!

5. I kept all my dads pipes. |

And they still smell good too! I loved the fragrance around his house when he smoked them.
My SO tried for a while, he could never quite get the knack of it. =(

And I'm not in the normal pipe-smoking demographic, as I am in my early 20s. I picked it up out of curiosity. It does seem to be a sadly disappearing hobby, though.

11. My grandfather still smokes a pipe |
|
Funny story:
He has smoked his pipe for years, and it's no secret amongst the family. One afternoon when I was in high school, however, I saw him at the grocery store standing outside smoking his pipe. I shouted and waved at him as I approached, and watched as he -- flustered -- looked around for a place to stash his pipe so that I wouldn't know that he smoked it. (Still not exactly sure why, either. He had to know that we knew that he smoked.) He ended up stuffing it into his pants pocket.
I stood and talked to him for 5 or 10 minutes. By the end, smoke was beginning to billow out of his pocket. He plead an excuse and began heading towards his car.
Still gives me a chuckle thinking about it.

Or the old tired line, is that a pipe in your pocket or are you glad to see me?
Liar liar pants on fire.
Why does a golfer where two pair of pants? Just in case he gets a hole in one.
