Poll question: Do you think I should reveal my real name (thanks for the idea, Magic Rat)
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 11:09 PM by liberalhistorian
Thanks to Magic Rat's seemingly endless creativity, I've decided to reveal my real name if enough of you wanna know it! And no, it's not something like Jane or Mary Smith, either!

4. That may be true, Robb,
but the beauty of it is that I live with my mom and stepdad, whose last name is different from mine, and I don't have my own listing in the phone book so it would be a lot harder to find my address and phone number. And when people call information, they can't get it, either, because I'm not in the phone book and there aren't any others with my last name locally.

28. do you really want everything you have ever said and will ever say
connected to your real name for as long as you live. that is the question, because that is what can happen. remember, it isn't just ascroft that we should think about. it's every wacked out freeper with time to kill.

i'd tell you a story that would convince you not to, but to tell the story i'd be identifing myself again and i'll never do that.

6. Okay, I gotta go get some shut-eye
now so I can function at least minimally at work tomorrow, but, since at this point it looks like the yeas are winning, I will leave a little hint, my initials are L.A.L., the A is for my middle name, which is Ann! And my first name was very popular for girls my age (almost 39), and even now.

11. Hmmmm,
you're too young for the first name to be Linda. About every fourth girl was named Linda the year I was born (1948) and I always had at least two or three best friends named Linda growing up.

Lauren? Laurel? Oh, I know! Lisa! Although that name was even more popular about two years later when my niece Lisa was born.

We have a winner, my first name is, indeed, Lisa, just like every third woman my age, lol! At least I missed being a Jennifer by about 5 minutes, thanks to my father's lateness in arriving after my mom had filled out my birth certificate.

BTW, you'll NEVER guess my last name on your own, it's too unusual! But I'll give you a hint if you're really, really nice to me today!

41. HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT??????????
Yes, actually, it DOES rhyme with "try not" and "why not." Okay, I'll give a hint which may or may not be obscure to you, depending on your musical likes and knowledge. My last name is the same as the Irish lead singer and songwriter of Thin Lizzy, who died of a drug overdose in the 80's. In fact, I've been told that he's a very, very, very distant cousin to the family. Now, put your thinking cap on!

47. I am, indeed, very proudly Irish,
with some English, Scottish, French and German thrown in for good measure. My ancestors are from County Mayo and County Limerick. My dream is to travel to Ireland one of these years, hopefully before I'm 90! My aunts and some cousins have already gone, leaving me "green" (of course!) with envy!

Can you say Patriot Act, boys and girls?

If you have a social security number, Ashcroft can track you down in minutes whether you have a phone number listed under your name or not.

14. Honestly
I don't think it's a good idea considering all of the tons of very personal information that you have posted about yourself here. I think it opens you up to a lot of potential problems. Do you really need more drama in your life? Also, it's not just you. You have to think about your son.

I vote an emphatic NO!

19. How about this?
Maybe you could just tell us your first name, and then if you wanted to go further you could tell us you last name in another thread at a later date.

Tell us why you are considering doing this. Personally, I wish we all had pronounceable real-ish names. It's easier to relate to someone when they have a name rather than a title, for instance.

It's kind of frustrating, this virtual friendship thing. I think we all know people here we'd like to be real friends with. I understand the need to want to break down the barriers that this format imposes.

Whatever you decide, we're here for ya.

34. That's a good idea.
I think because I have gotten to be virtual friends with so many on here, and I want to be able to stand up for what I believe in no matter what, it sometimes gets frustrating that I'm not known for who I really am, especially since I know the real names of many posters here whom I've gotten to know pretty well (virtually, at least)!

Also, after two glasses of wine and a hot bath, certain ideas just seem to pop into your head and you post them before you can stop yourself, lol!

29. Considering that several
posters are already using their real names on this board, I really doubt that Lisa I mean Liberalhistorian will really get any additional hate mail or any such thing just by posting her real name. I'm sure that a dedicated hacker could get into the DU database and find out who we all are, so why worry about it?

I've decided to become SheilaT for the present and see what it's like being a newcomer once again, although I'll have my same old attitude. I think maybe a lot of people have me on ignore under my old name, seeing as how rarely anyone seemed to respond to my comments lately. This should be interesting.
