OK. I Just "Discovered" the Band "Guster" This Summer.
I heard them for the first time on a radio station while I was in Chicago. I have never heard them here in L.A. What's with this?

How did I miss such a great band?

Am I the only person on Earth that didn't know about this group?

How did an old guy like me wind up being blown away by such a band?

Are there any others here who are fans of Guster?

1. Cool, I just discovered Rooney
Their song, "Blueside" is like Beatles/Beach Boys/ELO/modern rock. Then my daughter tells me the lead singer is the kid from the movie "The Princess Diaries" Whaddya know?

3. How old a guy are ya?
'cuz there's a couple other bands around nowadays you might be interested in: Guided by Voices, an amazing underground sensation led by Robert Pollard, a former schoolteacher from Dayton, Ohio, who's been making records that sound like John Lennon or Peter Gabriel jamming in a psychedelic lo-fi basement for about 20 years now; and The Shins, a fantastic young band from Albuquerque whose latest record, "Chute's Too Narrow," kinda sounds like a youthfully exhuberant version of the Hollies on good acid. These two are just the tip of the indie-rock iceberg, and very catchy and accesible to boot. They're probably the best new music around these days.

PS. I love seeing people over 25 getting into new music!

4. Guided by Voices and The Shins.
Here's a hint: I saw the Beatles when I was 11.

Thanks for the tips. You hit the right chords with names like Gabriel, Lennon and Nash.

I was cruising down the magnificient Lake Shore Drive this June and some station was playing a recording of a live concert of Guster that had been at the Navy Pier. I listened to one song after the next and the following day went straight away into a shop there and asked "Who is Guster?"

I wrote down the following from your post and I'm going to Virgin Records tomorrow evening anyway, so I will scout around for these two you recommended to me, RandomKoolzip:

Guided by Voices
The Shins
