I'm playing Final Fantasy X-2! Ask me anything.
I'm up to Chapter 4, and it's a very cool game so far. It's like Rob Tapert and Buddy Cole got together to do a console RPG. :) I hope the fanboys who trashed it before it was even finished will shut up now (but alas, they probably wont).

I could have done without some of the inane side missions though. Especially since most of them are needed to get 100% completion. The battle system is IMO the best in the series and being a fan of the job system from III, V and Tactics I just love its implementation here. Some of those outfits look like Carson from Queer Eye was left alone with no supervision though. We're talking Bob Mackie on acid kind of stuff. My favorite so far has to be the Trainer job. When Rikku has it she has a monkey that steals stuff! Hee. This game is so much fun.

I'll post a little review for my fellow gaming dorks when I beat the game.

1. I've liked all of the FF games so far.
Are they perfect? Nope. But visually they are really cool.

2. Not just visually.
I'm a Square dork running 10+ years now. Beaten every single FF multiple times, and 2 and 3 were the first console games I ever imported. I can honestly say there are no bad FF games. Are there ones I like more than others? Of course, no question. But I think we have yet to have a truly bad one. Square has always had high production values compared to everyone else in the genre, even back in the day.

I have to wait another five months. And that's still good: Xenosaga hasn't surfaced here yet.

I wonder why they even bother to make a crappy PAL adaption? I mean huge black borders and fat-looking characters? They could just use the PAL-60 mode supported by about all European TV-sets and release the US Version with minimal changes. But no: Sony requires all games released in Europe to be in PAL resolution (even if that means to leave the extra lines black and the game running slower).

To make my point:

NTSC.................................................PAL

5. Don't feel bad about Xenosaga
Don't feel bad about Xenosaga. It's a load of pretentious crap, much like Xenogears, only on an even worse scale. You know how Disc 2 of Xenogears was basically just pressing buttons to advance hopelessly inane dialogue? Imagine an entire game of that, and you've got Xenogears. It's not even interesting or well-done, either--especially not if you've seen as much sci-fi anime as I have. I'm sure there's a game in there somewhere, but I didn't see it. I never sell my games, but XS became the first since Secret of Evermore.

But yeah, I understand where you're coming from about being a PAL gamer. It just sucks. Mr. Chovexani is an Aussie and when he moved here he was like a kid in a candy store because he could actually play stuff.

We get screwed here too though, just not as badly. You guys actually got the "International" version of FFX. I want to fight Dark Shiva. *sniff*

6. Yes: at least had square the decency to improve the European version
The Bonus DVD was sweet as well. But why no PAL-60 mode?

The Dark Aeons and the improved Board were nice, though.

4. Since I spent all sorts of time learning Japanese,
I play these games in the native language. It's fun and all, but I have a big backlog of ridiculously long RPG's and stuff to do now... and soon I'll ad the new Evangelion RPG to the backlog...

7. My Japanese is at a very rudimentary level
My first boyfriend, in junior high, was a Japanese kid whose cousin used to send him stuff all the time. He got me a Famicom for my birthday (mostly so he could play it I think :P) and I imported FF2 and FF3. With the bf and a Nelson's dictionary I managed to hobble my way through it, mostly because it wasn't too complicated. I had a modchipped SNES and got through FF5 in much the same way, even though I only had the basic gist of what was going on. I wouldn't dare think of importing any of the later ones though. As dialogue heavy and complicated as FFX was I would have been totally lost. I would like to get the International version though since it's supposed to be English-friendly, one of these days I'm gonna break down and get a Japanese PS2. Modding PS2s just is not very smart.

Japanese versions aren't always better though. As riddled with Daravonese as our FF7 was ("Off course!"), at least it wasn't rushed out and full of bugs. We also got the extra Weapons that Japan only got with FF7 International. I just wish we always were so lucky. I'm dying to get my hands on Kingdom Hearts Final Mix so I can see the extra scene with Cloud and Sephiroth. :(
