My car got broken into last night |
|
Out of a back seat that looks like a homeless person lives in it, they grabbed one thing: a briefcase.
But that briefcase had my dad's tax records for the last 4 years in it (when I used to take care of it for him while he was sick -- he's gone now).
It may have also had my last year's tax record in it. And it's possible, now that I think of it, that dad's death certificate was in there too. It had been a while since I had opened the thing.
I've already called one of the credit bureaus, and put a credit alert on my soc. sec. number, in case the theif tries to become an identity theif.
It's zero degrees out, and I have no driver side window.
I know that there are worse things happening to people than having a car break in, but still, I'm kind of freaked out. And if some of my dad's other papers (wallet, death cert, etc) were in that case, I'm going to be really upset. I have to go through my things at home to know for sure.
Merry fucking Christmas, damn it.
Just had to vent. Thanks.

Karma will get them. Karma.
No one deserves to have something like that happen.

3. put an alert on your dad's number as well |
|
make sure all the credit bureaus know that he is deceased. Even though you won't be liable, someone will be left holding the bag.
that sucks, man, I lost a bunch of irreplacable CDs last spring in my breakin.

4. I lost some CD's last year |
|
that weren't even mine -- they were library CDs I had to pay for. That's what I got for leaving my car unlocked sometimes. That was another "grab and go" I think.
I did the automated thing for my soc sec number, as it was after hours, but I want to talk to a human being for my dad's number. I do hope I'm wrong and I have his death cert somewhere, or I may need to get a duplicate made if the credit bureau wants it. That would suck.
I did learn one thing today when the cop who came to investigate told me about the credit bureaus and where to go for their phone numbers. It's nice that if you contact one, the other two get the info as well.
I may call all three, though, as you suggest, for my dad's number.
