Much like the republican party, it is an invasive species with a penchant for inserting itself in places it doesn't belong and doesn't behave in any way like any normal plant. It always has to choke out everything else around it. It always has to have its way. It sucks life out of anything that tries to grow near it. It destroys homes. It destroys highways. It causes nothing but grief for any area afflicted with it. It listens to no voices of reason. It has a "My way or the highway" attitude from hell. I swear the republicans cloned that plant and mixed the dna with human dna to make their offspring. I mean really, how do repubs reproduce with that stuffy holier than thou attitude of theirs? Practical Uses for Kudzu

When the Southerners realised that they would have to learn to live with this evil weed they started attempting to find practical uses for it. They found that the stems of this vine were quite sturdy and thus made great ropes for use in place of conventionally man made materials. Being crafty, the women of the South took one look at this vine and saw baskets just waiting to be formed. They did however find that once these baskets were made you could not place them anywhere there was an abundance of moisture, such as a bathroom. Just because the vine had been cut did not mean it had quit growing. The Kudzu vine will begin growing again when introduced to moisture of any kind. Children and adults alike have also found many hours of enjoyment in treating the Kudzu as many of us have treated the fluffy white clouds that float by on a sunny day; if you look at the shapes formed by this vine draping over what it has come in contact with you, can see many a wondrous creation; castles, cars, ducks and so on.

At first glance, the states that voted for George Bush in 2004 and the states marked on this map as having feral hogs seemed to be one and the same. I mentioned this oddity to Joe Corn, who, scientist-like, declined to comment beyond the area of his expertise.

Afterward, I could not get the strange correspondence out of my mind. I compiled '04 red state-blue state data and matched it with SCWDS hog-population information on the map of that year. I found my first impression to be essentially correct. The presence of feral hogs in a state is a strong indicator of the support for Bush in '04. Twenty-three of the twenty-eight states with feral hogs voted for Bush. That's more than four-fifths; states that went for Kerry, by contrast, were feral-hog states less than a fifth of the time.

I drive past a HUGH!1! wisteria vine every day. It has grown to the top of a Southern Magnolias and some nearby oak trees. In the springtime it is covered with beautiful lavender colored blooms. in Tennessee. Only the trees planted in full sun have survived. Most of the trees in the woods have only a few live branches. They keep trying to sprout some new branches but the Dogwood Anthracnose gets those eventually. The disease is limited by temperature and elevation so it hasn't yet spread to the Georgia Piedmont.

In the south where the winters are moderate the first frost will turn kudzu into dead leaves and soon after just gray vines. The kudzu vine will continue growing the next summer almost from where it was stopped by cold weather the previous year. Kudzu in north Georgia and I assume all over the south has continued to grow rapidly and almost unabated in the summer of 2005. No one seems to care much or even pay much attention to it. Maybe that is because we accept it since there isn't much we can do about it except temporarily kill it with herbicide or let livestock graze on it when it gets to be too much of a problem. But the whole damn ANWR range is critical to habitat. So much for that idea.

How to Grow Kudzu

Choosing a Plot: Kudzu can be grown almost anywhere, so site selection is not the problem it is with some other finicky plants like strawberries. Although kudzu will grow quite well on cement, for best result you should select an area having at least some dirt. To avoid possible lawsuits, it is advisable to plant well away from your neighbors house, unless, of course, you don't get along well with your neighbor anyway.

Preparing the Soil: Go out and stomp on the soil for a while just to get its attention and to prepare it for kudzu.

Deciding When to Plant: Kudzu should always be planted at night. If kudzu is planted during daylight hours, angry neighbors might see you and begin throwing rocks at you.

Selecting the Proper Fertilizer: The best fertilizer I have discovered for kudzu is 40 weight non detergent motor oil. Kudzu actually doesn't need anything to help it grow, but the motor oil helps to prevent scraping the underside of the tender leaves when the kudzu starts its rapid growth. It also cuts down on the friction and lessens the danger of fire when the kudzu really starts to move. Change oil once every thousand feet or every two weeks which ever comes first.

Mulching the Plants: Contrary to what may be told by the Extension Service, kudzu can profit from a good mulch. I have found that a heavy mulch for the young plants produces a hardier crop. For best results, as soon as the young shoots begin to appear, cover kudzu with concrete blocks. Although this causes a temporary setback, your kudzu will accept this mulch as a challenge and will reward you with redoubled determination in the long run.

Organic or Chemical Gardening: Kudzu is ideal for either the organic gardener or for those who prefer to use chemicals to ward off garden pests. Kudzu is oblivious to both chemicals and pests. Therefore, you can grow organically and let the pests get out of the way of the kudzu as best they can, or you can spray any commercial poison directly on your crop. Your decision depends on how much you enjoy killing bugs. The kudzu will not mind either way.

Crop Rotation: Many gardeners are understandably concerned that growing the same crop year after year will deplete the soil. If you desire to change from kudzu to some other plant next year, now is the time to begin preparations. Right now, before the growing season has reached its peak, you should list your house and lot with a reputable real estate agent and begin making plans to move elsewhere. Your chances of selling will be better now than they will be later in the year, when it may be difficult for a prospective buyer to realize that underneath those lush green vines stands an adorable three bedroom house.

in spite of the cat's many attempts to wake me to make me feed her.

Going to have pizza and wine for breakfast at the 1:15 showing of Strangers on a Train at the Laurelhurst Theater, so it looks as though the good times may continue.

1233. I have been busy, bbq 12 briskets for a fundraiser, money going

to a family who lost everything in a fire. Finished the job about 7 am.

The food went fast, glad I kept one brisket back for the work crew, we wouldn't have had any brisket.

We cleaned up the area, and now I am drinking a nice cold beer and eating a large brisket sandwich.

I am really tried, right now.

The brisket turned out very well, the secret is in the sauce and pecan wood.:beer:

I have lived with Kudzu all my life. Isn't pleasant. I have not read all of this thread, so this might have already been mentioned, but I believe I read that Kudzu was an up and coming treatment for alcoholism? Anyone else read this?

CORVALLIS - Feral pigs, which are responsible for an estimated $800 million in annual damages to agriculture commodities nationwide, are rapidly expanding their range across Oregon, according to a recent risk assessment conducted by Oregon State University scientists.
Also called wild boars or wild swine, omnivorous feral pigs vary in appearance, but most have hairy coats, thick necks and shoulders and wedge-shaped heads suitable for digging and rooting.

"These animals have the capability to create incredible damage across a large area," said Bruce Coblentz, a fisheries and wildlife scientist in OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences. "One pig on one golf course in one night can cause $50,000 to $60,000 in damages. They are extreme generalists with a capacity for tremendous growth."

The invasive pigs have been recorded in locations throughout southern and central Oregon, and their distribution may continue to spread as global climate change results in warmer temperatures farther north, said Coblentz, who authored the assessment with researcher Cassie Bouska. Feral pigs are most heavily concentrated in Florida, Hawaii, Texas and California. Despite not being native to the United States, their nationwide population is estimated at more than 4 million.

Feral pigs are often introduced into new areas by humans who plan to return and hunt them at a later time, Coblentz said, adding that "the majority of feral pigs in Oregon have been kicked out of the back of a pickup truck." This manner of scattered distribution could explain the animals' recent appearance in central Oregon around the towns of Prineville and Madras, areas Coblentz said were not traditionally thought of as habitable for the pigs.
