My vote goes to "Tiranic". Not a classic by any means but I think it was enjoyable.

1. I saw 'Judge Dredd' a couple of nights ago...
Much criticized but I didn't find it that bad (for the genre).

2. It wasn't true to the comic book
That was my beef with it.

6. not bad at all.. if you're into non-stop product placement.
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 12:17 PM by frylock
Did you get the urge to "make a run for the border" while watching?

on edit: oooooooops.. my bad. That was another unwatchable Stallone flick, Demolition Man. Carry on!

3. Godfather Three
Doesn't compare well with two previous, both are classics, but give it a watch and you'll see it is still a very engrossing film. Pacino is a bit over the top, but you can see a deteriorating Michael Corleone who is ill, and facing mortality. Interesting look at Vatican fiscal scandals and death of John Paul I, as well.

14. No, that movie deserves its reputation
thanks to Sophia Coppola's horrendous "acting". I never thought one person could wreck an entire movie, but she did.

Hell, I can be as authoritative as anyone else! I never thought one person could ruin a movie, either, and she didn't! So there!

8. Me too! (A.I.)
Definitely got a bad rap...I loved it...although I went with my 9 year old son when it came out, and it was a bit intense for him...

13. I was wracking my brain...
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 01:13 PM by skypilot
...trying to think of a good movie that got a bad rap and then I see that you guys mention A.I. and I think to myself "DUH!!" I LOVED that movie even though it was not at all what I expected. I own a copy and I've watched it at least 10 times. Initially I didn't want to see it because I thought the combination of Spielberg and Haley Joel Osment would produced something unbearably...well...Spielbergian. It was getting nothing but bad word of mouth around these parts and people were stunned when I told them that I loved it. I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

23. A.I. was one of the greatest films most people disliked.
Here we go again. You've got me going about this picture that I obsessed about for over a year. I, for one, thought Spielberg, Jude Law, and HJO got a raw deal, in terms of critical abuse, word-of-mouth (most of which is a result of the dumbing-down people get from the media, particularly the sector that employs people like Rush Limbaugh), and lack of recognition from the industry.

Could Spielberg have done better? Absofrickinlutely! I think it would have done better as a three-part mini-series, since it weighed in at about three hours and people were complaining about how it glossed over certain issues. For reference, I break down the film into the following parts:

Prologue - Prof. Handy's proposal.
Act I - David arrives at the Swinton household.
Act II - Monica abandons David in the woods near the Cybertronics plant.
Act III - David is found by the advanced mecha in the icy remains of Manhattan (complete with World Trade Center towers).

* The rivalry between David and Martin could have been fleshed out a bit. Quite a bit, as a matter of fact.

* The process by which David was created was completely ignored. Even one scene with Professor Handy losing his patience, throwing things at the engineers, weeping at his desk, etc., in short, showing his considerable pain like only William Hurt can, would have helped a lot.

* The extent of the "animus" between mecha and humans could have been better defined. Apart from the opening scene, we didn't hear about such things as flesh fairs (for example) until the close of the first act.

Apart from these suggested improvements, which would have made the movie run about five or six hours (which was probably why Stanley Kubrick never attempted it - Haley would have grown four inches and missed a year of school during the shoot), I consider A.I. one of Spielberg's best films, even if my wife does absolutely hate it.

20. Silverado was a great movie
I can't say the same about Bull Durham or Field of Dreams, but they were at least enjoyable. No, I'd say Costner factor sinks any and all movies just since 1989.

27. Waterworld is a lot of fun
people need to watch it as a comedy, not try to take it seriously. It's a very enjoyable movie if you don't try to make something portentous and dystopian of it.

I know it wasn't the greatest, but I thought it was a fun screwball comedy. I still don't know what all the fuss was about.

Ishtar is right up there with "Dude, where's my car?" in terms of screwball comedy.

16. agree on Ishtar...
Some really pointless, dull stuff in it but much of it was hilarious. Beatty and Hoffman collaborating so earnestly on those crap songs...I pissed my pants.

24. Yeah, those songs were a blast.
And, yeah, some of Ishtar was pretty dumb, but never on the level of something like, say, Battlefield Earth or Howard the Duck.

31. Don't you go dissing "Howard the Duck"
Don't you blaspheme! It's the "Citizen Kane" of the duck-from-outer-space genre. I mean, seriously, what were people expecting when they made a live-action movie based on an underground comic book? Beckett? Jeffrey Jones and Tim Robbins alone are worth the price of admission.

21. Foreboding LAH Quote
Nick: There are lots of things worse than movies: politicians, wars, forest fires, famine, plague, sickness, pain, whores, politicians...

Jack Slater (Ahnold): You already mentioned them (politicians).

Nick: I know I did. They are twice as bad as anything else.

25. This was a rather "Fun Movie"
Demolition Man

1993

And Sandra Bullock was cute as a button.

Frozen in 1996, Phoenix, a convicted killer is "thawed" out for parole well into the 21st century. Revived into a crime free society, Phoenix resumes his murderous rampage, and no one can stop him. Spartan, the cop who captured Phoenix in 1996 has also been cryogenically frozen, this time for a crime he didn't commit. In desperation they turn to Spartan to help recapture Phoenix. Marco Brambilla - Director

Sylvester Stallone - John Spartan

Wesley Snipes - Simon Phoenix

Sandra Bullock - Sandra Bullock

Nigel Hawthorne - Dr. Raymond Cocteau

Benjamin Bratt - Alfredo Garcia

Bob Gunton - Chief George Earle

26. What Dreams May Come
I loved it. So did my husband. We were both blubbering wrecks at the end of it. The Richard Matheson book is better (unsurprisingly) but that movie is nowhere near the reeking pile of goat feces one would think from the reviews. There's some kind of backlash against Robin Williams playing serious roles that I don't get; really good comedians are nearly always good dramatic actors. Comedy is HARD.
