I just saw "War Of The Worlds" on DVD last night! |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 05:01 PM by Seabiscuit
AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!
My wife and I agreed it was by far the worst film we've seen besides "Druids". Tom Cruise as an excruciatingly stupid and utterly spaced out Christopher Lambert as "Vercingenerix".
Nothing made any sense. All the characters were hollow. No plot.
Spielberg completely sold out to make money. I'll never watch another Spielberg movie. Ever. Whatever talent he once possessed has been drowned in too many cocktail parties for the rich and famous.

2. All the little girl did through the film was scream. |
|
Tripods had some redeeming value - but the main focus of the movie was the vapid, limpid nonrelations between the unbelievably stupid Cruise character and his incredibly dumb son and screaming banshee daughter.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw that! Ugh, it drives me up the fucking wall when they have female leads in movies, no matter what their age, whose sole job is to scream the entire time (see Jurassic Park 3 for another prime example of this)! God, that is a major movie pet peeve of mine. Actually, it's not so much a pet peeve as it is a major psychotic hatred.

18. Unfortunately, if you saw the original War of the Worlds, |
|
the self-confident female lead was also reduced to screaming and fainting uselessness.
Late 50's "strong man, weak woman" thinking.

now just checking...she really isn't a relative, right?
Frankly, I really didn't like her looks. She reminds me of a child I taught who was unpleasant in the extreme. And she sure did scream alot.
And then BOOM! It's over. They die. End of story.
And what was with Tim Robbins character? That was just strange.
I will give Spielberg one thing..I liked the aura..the settings. It has an authentic feel.

3. I have an informal rule about remakes, |
|
if I liked the original, I do not see the remake.
If I did not like the original, I do not see the remake.

I kept hoping Tripods would get to Tom Cruise and his family (most of all his annoying screaming kid), and cut them all into little bitty chunks, but no such luck.

|
If you're town was attacked by aliens when you were the kid's age, you would probably be screaming too.

19. No one's blaming the kid for screaming. It was the script and directing. |
|
That's about all she was cast to do in the film. No character development. No personality development. No realistic relations with her relatives. No nothing. Nada. Zilch. Just "waaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!"

9. WTF is going on with the Cruise/Spielberg bashing? |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 06:15 PM by edbermac
WOTW was pretty good IMHO, why is everyone so bent out of shape about it? I can separate Cruise the persona from Cruise the actor and he was pretty good in this. If you don't like the persona why bother judging whether the film is good or not? I might not care for Woody Allen's personal life, but he makes pretty good films. And at least Spielberg is making pics like this and Munich instead of the cutesy crap like Always and Hook...

11. I saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I liked it. |
|
It was close though, between War of the Worlds and that.
Glad I opted for the Brangelina film. Gosh they look so good together. I thought it was really cute.
Thanks for trying to warn me about WoTW, LOL....I have to see it anyhow!

13. I think Munich will redeem Spielberg. His films of late have ultrasucked. |
|
That's for sure.
He's obviously a talent, but I don't know just WTF he's doing lately, as all of his films for some time now have been big blahfests.

I mean it had no ending! It just ended - the machines fell down. What the hell was that?

21. That's the way HG Wells ends to book |
|
They die because they are not immune to common bacteria and viruses that we are.
Wells's point is that we sometimes survive through sheer dumb luck, not because we are technologically superior.

Speilberg makes these movies so he can finance movies like "Munich"
Think about it - right before every "Schindlers List" there was a "Jurassic Park."

24. I know someone who loved it |
|
but I wasn't particularly fond of it, either. It was WAY too graphic for me, and it was so DARK all the time. That is, the lighting suckd. I don't really care that much for Tom Cruise anyhow, but I pretty much prefer the older version.
The "son" was a major PITA for me. It was like they left out a whole bunch of stuff that explained his animosity to his father, and just it wasn't in any way clear. You are right, too, about the characters. As far as plot was concerned, it was simply like individual chapters or scenes without any links and without a thread running through.
And they were really messing with the stories by having three or four different methods of killing and using people used, instead of making it clear whether they needed (or wanted) us for food, or just wanted us out of the way. Stupid.
I do like Spielberg, and won't have any problem seeing other movies he makes, but I judge movies totally on the strength of the movies themselves. And if I hear about a movie that is a remake of a TV show or an older movie, I shudder uncontrollably and usually will skip it anyhow. Movies and TV shows that were made without regard to being "moneymakers" were made with more love than anything that is later made with monetary goal only. You can't duplicate what was done with earnestness even with special effects and a cooler look. It definitely loses something in the translation.

25. In the book once they eliminate resistance |
|
they start using humans for food. Thus the mixed motives in the film. I thought it was stupid to have the US military shoot a disabled tripod down just to get a cheep cheer from the audience. Also, the reunion at the end was totally hokey.

and I thought it was a pretty OK sci-fi horror flick if that's all you were expecting. I hated the kid, though. She screamed so much I sort of hoped the aliens would eat her just to shut her up.
