Warren Spahn memorial thread |
|
He was a Hall of Fame pitcher and a friend of my dad; they served together in WWII. RIP, Warren Spahn.
He won entry to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973; he won 20 games in 13 different seasons; he holds the NL record for innings pitched; and won the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in WWII. He remains the winningest left-handed pitcher in major league history with 363 wins. He even holds the record for home runs in the NL by a picher with 35.
My dad's batallion had a hell of a team in training camp.
Rest in peace. I'm glad I got to meet you.

I can't remember the whole saying but the end was "...Spahn, and Sain and pray for rain." I think I remember reading that was said in Milwaukee about the pitching staff when the Braves were there.

3. I have a ball autographed by Warren Spahn. |
|
I used to date Buddy Bell's brother when he was a hot Indians player. He got me a ball autographed by the team, and Spahn was the pitching coach at the time.

5. I saw Spahn pitch in Candlstick Park in 1961 |
|
I know that style alone won't get a pitcher to the Hall of Fame, but he had the best form of any pitcher I ever saw, live or on TV. And I think he won a battlefield commision in WW II, no small feat. They didn't come in C-rations.

Jack Rabbit, age 13, was at Candlestick Park in San Francisco as Warren Spahn, wrapping up his career with the Giants, chalked up his 363rd and last major league victory in the second game of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs.

13. The Giants nearly won the pennant that year |
|
I wish they had, because they were the best team and because a World Series appearance would have been a great way for Spahnie to bow out.

14. Juan Marichal vs. Warren Spahn (July 2, 1963) |
|
The Giants beat the Braves 1-0 in 16 innings in one of the greatest pitching duels as San Francisco's Juan Marichal and Milwaukee's Warren Spahn each pitched complete games. Mays won the game with a solo homer with one out in the 16th.
Spahn, 42, allowed nine hits and one walk, striking out two. He entered the game with five consecutive wins, and the loss dropped his record to 11-4. Mays' homer ended a streak of 27 consecutive shutout innings by Spahn. Marichal allowed eight hits and four walks, striking out 10. The win was his eighth in a row and improved his record to 13-3.
In his next start, Spahn threw a 2-0 shutout against the Houston Astros.. on just three days rest!

:hi: I didnt grow up in his time but my dad waited on him and got his autograph, plus I am a lefty like Warren was, so he's kind of a hero to me, I pitched when I played baseball. Sounds like a good guy. Too bad he died.

18. Willie Mays loved him, too... |
|
Mays's first home run was off the great Warren Spahn (1951). He hit it over the roof of the Polo Grounds. Interesting, he played his last year with my team, the SF Giants, and I was happy to see the two giants united at last, Spahn and Mays!

19. One of the all-time underrated greats. ALL time. |
|
His statistics are magnificent, his longevity amazing. Another baseball great from my childhood gone (sigh). Can anyone imagine even approaching by half - hell, a third - his 382 complete games in their career in this day and age? A class act. Guess Musial and Mays are now the greatest living ex-ballplayers. In my book, Spahn was right there with them.
