Had a little situation that has bothered me all week long. So i thought i might get it off my chest and get some input.
We were walking into a store as a family unit. My oldest daughter asks me what a white woman sees in a black man. JEEBUS! i had one of those smoking gear lock down moments in my head. I don't know where she got this from, 1st i ain't white myself(native)we have black friends, and have them around often. I was raised up that blacks were just like the rest of us(thank you mom). I have never made a negative remark concerning mixed racial relations, and would not allow such remarks to be made in my house.
All i can think of is maybe it's a normal question(please don't let me be raising a racist). The only response i could come up with was, well because he's a man, he's just like any other man. I told her maybe she thinks he's funny, or good lookin'. I got a weird look from her.
This really bothers me. I want her to look at everyone the same, not divide them into colors and classes. I can't help but think i may have done something wrong along the way. I hope i am just over reacting, but it really is bugging the shit outta me.
Any recommendations?

I'm hoping it was just a simple curiosity question. Shes at the age where it's hard to tell. What got me were the odd looks she gave me during my reply.

Tough to tell if that's one of the "curious" kind or if she really is picking up something from somewhere else. Kids pick up really weird stuff from each other sometimes.

5. Yeah it's got me perplexed. |

Thing is her best friend is black. I would have figured they had discussed boy/girl relations. Ya no i like so and so he's cute etc.
Then again it may be her hanging out with her cousins at her uncles. There are some sketchy people i don't like who hang there. She's not supposed to be allowed there, but she sneeks off and goes there while she's staying at her grandparents. I might have to put my foot down a bit harder if thats the case.

4. I think you told her just the right thing. |

Sounds like you were honest and didn't over-react. If she's 11, you'll know soon enough whether someone has planted racist thoughts in her head. Peace, William Bloode. :hi:

I was just about 1mm from having an explosive rant right there in front of Target lol!
Thats also why i have mulled it over so long. Part of me wants to go all nazi, and put her through my version of sensitivity training. I think i will just sit back and watch though. Hopefully i can either chalk it up as a simple question, or observe and deduce where maybe some negative influences are coming from.
Take care Heidi, and have a wonderful new year ;)
