1. Love it. I happen to think it's the ultimate game.
It's really about 50% strategy and 50% luck--which is, in my opinion, a perfect blend. A bad player can play a great player and score a thrilling win, but that won't be repeated over time.

I've not tried the shockwave version, but I've played a few games on Yahoo! and have a program for my PDA. Mostly, though, I love the sound of the dice hitting the board and the snap of the men when they hit each other, so I tend to go for "live action".

Backgammon was HUGE when I started playing it in the '70s. I'm hoping it will have its upswing again.

7. It's only the best two player game ever!
It was insanely popular back in the seventies and I won my share of tournaments in college. It looks trivial at first but it's actually a very subtle game.

Unlike Chess and Go, there's enough luck that beginners don't get discouraged. However, the superior player will win in the long run.

I've read Magriel's book cover to cover several times and I'm still learning from it. Diversity and duplication are just the beginning. Knowing when to take risks and when to play it safe is also key.

I have a freeware backgammon program called Jellyfish on the desktop and another program for the PDA.

A few years ago on Ebay I found a beautiful antique set with a cork playing surface and swirled bakelite checkers. I take it with me to poker tournaments. In case I get eliminated early, I can usually scare up a game.

Oh, and playing with the doubling cube is a must.

Yeah, I'm a backgammon nut.

4. I have to learn how to play it
My boyfriend likes to play it when he is trying to quit smoking, gives his hands something to do.

14. Have your boyfriend teach you.
But be forewarned: It's about as addictive as smoking. (But at least it won't wreck your health or make your breath smell bad. :))

11. Acey ducey
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 07:03 PM by pokerfan
It's like regular backgammon except:

1) you start with all your checkers off the board

2) If you roll a 1-2 (acey ducey), you get to play the 1-2 plus any double of your choice and you get to roll again.

It was very popular in the Navy. Maybe your girl friend was as well. :)

Check my profile.

Right now I'm cycling between DU and a backgammon match with Snowie, a strong computer program.

I've read two of Robertie's books, but need to get my hands on Magriel's
