I got flooded out! (Russian River, Sonoma County, CA) |
|
The bad news is that there is approx 5 feet of water in what used to be our apartment. We left about noon yesterday, just as the river was about to come up through the floor.
The good news is that I saw it coming. Even though my neighbors, and some old time river rats were telling me not to worry too much, I rented a cargo van on Tuesday, and spent four days packing and loading, and getting all of our stuff into a storage locker twenty miles away on high ground. By thursday some neighbors were chuckling as we loaded our crap up the steps to the truck. By saturday morning, they weren't laughing anymore, but were playing catch-up, and frantically scrambling to get their possessions to high ground.
Last night we enjoyed a wild new year's eve party in Marin county, and I've just woke up to the reality of being without a place to live.
Guess I'll call FEMA (Bwahahahaha!)

Isn't this weather something? My power's been out since 6 am yesterday (I'm running off a generator right now) and the power at work was off for two hours this morning. I got back from my lunch break and the only thing running were some emergency lights - I turned around, got my Maglite out of the car and got to work. Everyone else was sitting around up front until it dawned on them that they could get a lot done with a flashlight. Since I always carry lights (I keep one in my car, one in my coat pocket and one in my bag), I was able to equip a few other people and it was actually kinda fun.
The wind's been really gnarly.
