Is is wrong to laugh at a commercial for "Brokeback Mountain"? |
|
I keep seeing a flashback of the "Boondocks" cartoon where grandpa and straight lace Tom went to see the movie thinking it was a traditional cowboy movie.

of Heath Ledger with a bruise under his eye. So Jake G, finally punched you, huh?
Maybe you should have made moves on his sister, instead.
It totally cracks me up. Jake hurt Heath! Cry me a river, dudes.

7. I laughed so hard I cried at the trailer. |

I thought of medical school, where they made us watch three days of porn movies with all sorts of people having sex, old people, young people, gay people, people with cerebral palsy, everything you can imagine. During the gay men flick, the guy next to me started squirming uncontrollably. I could see the guy sweating in a darkened lecture hall. I didn't know him well at the time, but I knew his brother from my college dorm, and could attest to his homophobia by proxy alone. (His brother came up to me when I was moving in to warn me that my roommate-to-be wore makeup, but that the roommate wasn't "like that").

The scary one was the straight couple. That made me sweat. She was pretty enough. He was hot,but had terminal cancer. Radiation burns on his body, scars where a lung had been removed. Watching them make love was weird - part of me was thinking "I am watching a man die", part of me was thinking how beautiful they were together.
I love those medical movies. I'm over the gay/straight thing (except politically). There's something amazing about watching ordinary people touch each other with love. More people should see those movies.

13. Why did they make you watch those films? |
|
I'm sure there's a perfectly legitimate-from-a-medical-standpoint reason, but it seems...strange.

15. I think so we don't get grossed out hearing about it. |
|
People tell their doctors all about their sex life, ask for advice and support, all that stuff. It goes double for the people whose friends flip out at the idea, or who have no friends.
I didn't particuarly have a problem watching any of it, but there were some people who were mightily squeamish.

I can just see it!
"We took our three year old to see Brokeback Mountain. Her opinion? Two thumbs up. For the horseys. Her only criticism was that there should have been more horseys."

14. I laughed at the first commercial I saw for it |
|
but my flash back involved the South Park episode about the film festival when Cartman doesn't want to go because he doesn't want to watch gay cowboys sitting around a camp fire eating pudding.
