Just curious,... anyone planning on seeing Hostel? |
|
Not really my cup of tea, but wondered if this type of movie appeals to anyone? Merely for the sake of late night (early morning) conversation.

2. I'm guessing it's a horror film |

by the same guy that made Cabin Fever. I've seen trailers for it on television, that seem rather disturbing... What I found out about it on imdb let me know I wouldn't be seeing it--they used a LOT of blood in the making of it.
Sorry I am not much help on this.

I don't really get how anyone would find that interesting or entertaining, but to each his own I suppose.
I'm just rather surprised by the fact that movies are getting weirder and gorier and more than I would expect go to see this stuff.

The only good I can see coming out of this movie is some kids that think they like to watch torture and stuff because it shows how manly they are - coming out of this movie with nightmares about it.

on the imdb boards about this. Some think it's disturbing and wrong to even put this kind of thing in a movie--of course others defended their right to see it, and the filmmakers to make it.
Interesting...

8. Yes, but I'll wait for DVD. |
|
Normally I'd be in line to see it on opening night, but since we have a baby now it costs so much to have a night out. We've only been to the movies a couple times since he's been born. (Dawn of the Dead remake and War of the Worlds.)
Anyway, I grew up on horror films of all types. I was asking my husband last night after seeing the commercial for Hostel on TV, "Why do I want to see that?" My husband said, "Because that's the kind of movie you used to watch with your dad when you were growing up and it makes you feel safe and warm. In other words, you're a freak."
I'm actually very sensitive to violence in movies, tv and books. I cry easily. Things stay with me for days. Still, I'm fascinated.
I've seen the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre about 25 times. I remember about the 10th time I saw it, I was mortified. I thought, "How fucking sick am I that I've seen this so many times before and enjoyed it every time. It's horrible. It's gratuitous. Why would I want to watch people being terrorized and tortured and murdered? Why would anyone? What's wrong with us?"
Then the 11th time I saw it, I was back to being thrilled.
I've always been the type to turn and face the monster in my nightmares, or walk into the dark without knowing what's there. I've always been the type who would rather know than not know. And I've always had a kind of innate understanding that there can be no love without hate, no serenity without anxiety, that each thing is defined by its opposite, and without its opposite would lose all form and meaning. I've always felt that the further I delve into the dark, the greater capacity I'll have for the light.
That may explain some of my attraction.
But I also think my husband has a point. I grew up on it and it makes me feel like I belong.
I'm very curious how others will answer.
Thanks for asking.

To describe yourself as sensitive, I'm impressed--you're really BRAVE! There's no WAY I could sit through Texas Chainsaw Massacre for ten minutes, much less ten times! :wow:
Given that you grew up on them and bonded with your dad over this kind of fare, I can understand it more. Also I like what you said about facing the dark giving you more capacity for the light--that's a cool way to look at it.
Personally, you're way courageous--I close my eyes when I throw up, I can't stand to see it. I have NO capacity for this stuff at all. LOL! But I'm not going to knock others for it. It's kind of fascinating to me that people do dig these movies. :hi:

I really appreciate your ubderstanding. I'm really not a sicko.
How I've kept from being desensitized, I am not sure. I've always had an extreme sense of empathy. I'm very emotional. And I tend to leave myself vulnerable, rather than close myself off...unless my son is involved, then I'm very protective.

Quentin Tarantino is a sick mo-fo.
I only like supernatural horror films, like "The Ring." It scares me, but I know these things don't really happen in real lfe. Insane sadistic murderers, on the other hand, are all too common. I don't like that reminder.

It's probably not even as intense as the Saw movies, but it just has some stuff in it that really got to me. It's basically a film about these kids who go on a road trip, get stranded, someone stops to "help" them, and... I started a thread about it a few days ago that talks more about why it freaked me out so much. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=210x11191

It really wasn't all that graphic of a movie; just very disturbing, at least for me. I think it was the fact that they left quite a bit to the imagination that actually bothered me. I didn't really mind that it was a bit more slow-moving than most horror movies, though, 'cause, in my case at least, it made me care a little more about the characters than is generally the case in most horror movies. I think a lot of people found the way it was structured to be tedious, though.

26. Tarntino was on Letterman last night |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 02:11 AM by buddyhollysghost
He was pretty intense, but also pretty funny, telling tales about spending New Year's Eve in Iceland, where all the women are drunk and look like Supermodels.
They showed a clip of the movie, which appears to be about some traveling college students who are abducted to serve as victims for rich folks who pay to have the experience of torturing actual human beings.
At the very least, it would be an interesting study of Neocons....but the clip they showed was painful to watch.. and Tarentino insinuated that was just the tip of the bloodfest...er... iceburg

I love horror and I will see this-but not until it comes out on dvd. You said earlier that you grew up watching them w/ your dad. I did too. My mother hated horror movies and my dad loves them. I remember seeing Aliens at the theater w/ my father because my mother refused and he needed a "date". And old horror movies late at night were a staple in my home. Popcorn, soda(which was a huge treat) and snuggling down under lap quilts while watching scary movies w/ the lights off.
For me, there is a sense of security in horror movies. But I prefer the "smart" horror over gory horror.

but other than putting up the money and his name, I don't get the sense he did much else (writing, directing)--since he was the producer, executive producer at that.
He's doing publicity for the film. With his name having a sort of recognition value-it will probably make more with people THINKING he's more involved.
If it was a typical Tarantino flick, I'd be there but for this :scared: LOL!

Other than that, it's supposed to be relatively tame.
still, what scares me more is that this is purportedly based on true events. word is, the director of the film ran into a thai website that advertised murder vacations, where you can pay some money(10 thousand) i think to torture/kill whoever you wanted. THAT is what realllllly scares me, more than any special effects in the movie.

:wtf: I hope that is NOT true! The idea that ANYONE would pay someone to take a human life-- I have no words for such a thing.
I understand that there are people that pay others to tempt, tease and torture them in sexual ways (dominatrixes and such), I've never really known what to make of that, and I don't judge it. Who knows why some find something like that a turn on? I kind of applaud the fact that they can accept themselves as they are and embrace their 'dark' side.
But the rumour you heard and described that regards this movie, is a whole other realm. :puke: Embracing such a dark side is illegal last I checked. Shouldn't these people be seeking therapy as opposed to a murder vacation?
