I quit smoking weed too. I quit when I started trying to get pregnant. I think sobriety and parenthood go pretty well together.

7. Okay, here goes
1. Star Wars III (the only "new" movie I saw)
2. Swearing. If I swear in my "private life" I may oops and swear in front of my students. But, I'm a confirmed potty mouth -- my grandma taught me how to swear.
3. I'm pretty ethical -- but I do tend to drive fast.
4. For my parents 50th anniversary, I bought them a Disney cel commemorating Mickey and Minnie's 50th. Dad loved it, mom asked my sister why I gave them "that." My sister told them it was because I thought it looked like them.
5. Cheese & mushroom omelet, or Costco chicken.
6. Cake, pies, etc. I can't cook well enough to cook for other people -- but I can bake!
7. Jammies.

31. It's a suburbs thing
Split a handful of kids into two teams, set up a 'jail' area. One team runs off into the woods, backyards etc and hides, then the other comes after them in a minute. We had a perfect island block for this. Touch one of the hiding team and they're caught, but they can all be broken free by someone else from the hiding team running through the jail and tagging them.

Games would last for hours. However, what with the attitudes I've seen on DU, I doubt parents would allow anything like this these days.

44. They love it, my son especially.
They stay out until 10-11 some nights playing it. They play on our side of the street in the woods, and really have a blast.

We are fortunate to live in a pretty safe area, so I don't worry about them playing. They don't need to run across streets, etc. I would be worried if they were running across streets at that hour because some of the neighbors have a tendency to drive too fast and drink too much.

Do you have several places where you give annually? Or were you just moved by this particular, horrific event?

I wish I could have given more. I still think about all the people stranded without food or water, with nothing to feed their children, and just cry.

I donate to pediatric aids research as well as the Children's Defense fund.

I was so moved by Katrina, I felt compelled to give til it hurt, plus my company matched it, so it ended up being a $50,000 donation.

I think we are a lot alike :-) At least from what I read on your other posts. Especially when you said you wanted to move to New Paltz one time. I went to college there, met my husband there & married him there. We had to move - to expensive, but I think we left our hearts there too (the Gunks, my dh is a climber). Maybe one day we can meet up when dh and I come back home for a visit. My little guys are close to your little ones age (they will be 19 mos on the 8th) :hi:

59. I just applied for a job at Bard College...
...and am looking at properties in the Red Hook area now. I hope I get the job and that it pays enough that I can take it and get out of here. It's so pretty in the Ulster/Dutchess Co. area.

It would be great of our kids could meet!

82. It is a great area!
We moved to Maine a year ago, but our families and friends still live there. My husband and I were both born in Poughkeepsie. He has never lived anywhere else (except other places in NY). The last place we lived was outside of Woodstock. We loved it there. There is a great playground in New Paltz. Everytime we visit we take our kids there. You have to take your son there! The big wooden playground - you will meet a ton of people there too. There are also others in Saugerties, Woodstock, Standfordville, and Kidgston that are really cool (the big wooden ones). They don't have them like that up here. Red Hook is a really nice place to live. Rhinebeck Health Food store has a really good cafe to eat in, kinda price, but they have the best avocado sandwich. PM me if you need any info in that area. I know I don't live there anymore, but I may be able to help with some info if needed.

1. What was your favorite movie of 2005?
I saw quite a few I like -- none jump out as "absolute favorite." I loved Serenity and Kung Fu Hustle (yes, really).

2. Is there a vice in which you used to regularly indulge that you gave up over a year ago? What is it? When did you quit? Why?
I quit smoking over a decade ago. I wasn't really addicted (maybe a quarter pack a day at my peak) but I was getting there. I just decided not to smoke one day.

3. What's the most unethical thing you do on a regular or semi-regular basis?
Depends who's defining "unethical." I eat animals. I don't check the labels to make sure what I buy is sweatshop free (although I stay away from WalMart). I shop at Target and Walgreens. I date a married man, and started dating him while I was still married (I'm now divorced, his is still in progress, we were both separated and divorcing when we met, I had Christmas dinner with his soon-to-be-ex-wife, who also has a new SO, so don't give me any "he'll never actually divorce her if he can get some on the side" crap). I don't give money to panhandlers.

4. What is the most generous gift you have ever given?
Dunno. I've given pretty good charitable gifts to my alma mater. And my dad's retirement gift was pretty cool (a day in the kitchen at a local restaurant -- he's a hobby chef).

5. What is your favorite thing to cook for yourself alone?
Quick Asian soup -- 1/4 c memmi soup base, 2 c water, 1 handful Asian wheat noodles, one egg

6. What is your favorite thing to cook for others?
Probably brunch or cookies. I cook a lot for others.

7. What are you wearing?
Cords, sweater

8. How many phone numbers do you have? (work, cell, home...)
Work, cell.

9. How many email addresses do you have?
Oh lord. Work (with several aliases for the various misspellings of my name), the one that came with the ISP that I've never used, my Wisconsinite address, two Yahoo, one Hotmail, one MSN mail, one Gmail (most I don't use)....

10. What do you remember most about your childhood home?
The cardboard "space capsule" my dad assembled in the family room.

33. Hmmm.
1. I don't really know, I haven't seen THAT many movies from 2005, and the ones I've heard the best opinions of, I haven't seen yet :P

2. I quit smoking 3 1/2 or 4 years ago.

3. I constantly post on and read DU all day long at work.

4. After shelling out quite a bit of cash for Christmas presents for the family, and while my mom was in debt up to her eyebrows thanks to my siblings, she said she needed to go grocery shopping one weekend when I was there for a visit. I said "I'll go with you," went with her, paid for her cart full of groceries and gave her $100 cash as well. I was close to broke at the time myself, but she'd helped me out many times when I was being crushed by bills and such, so it felt very good to do.

5. Depends on my mood, Chicken Picatta maybe (using a bottled sauce, quick, easy and delicious).

6. Lasagna maybe or, I'm very good at most Mexican dishes, so often times I'll do those. Especially here in Massachusetts where most people look on Mexican food as some kind of exotic and mysterious meal :P

7. Jeans and a black fleece pullover.

8. 4

9. 5 (if you include e-mail being sent as text message to my cell phone).

10. I remember being able to see the red rocks of Sedona from our back yard. I remember picking blackberries from the huge bushes out back lining the old-fashioned canal/irrigation ditch that ran behind the house (not concrete lined or anything just a huge trench that drew water from the river then rejoined the river about 10 miles later. I remember always having a big (I mean HUGE) vegetable garden out back (partially for veggies and partially as camouflage for another kind of garden my dad was growing - note to law enforcement, this was over 20 years ago now, and the garden is long since plowed under). :)

1. What was your favorite movie of 2005?

I don't think I went to the movies last year. Theaters cost too much and nobody complains when I talk through or yell at movies when I'm home :D.

Do exes count ;-)?

I don't do stuff I see as unethical although I'm sure my standards are different than everyone else's.

4. What is the most generous gift you have ever given?

Except for scallops I love every type of sea food I've tried and I'll cook it for myself often.

1. What was your favorite movie of 2005?
I forget the title, but it's the one where the kid got shot by the cop at the end and he was holding a statue and not a gun.

2. Is there a vice in which you used to regularly indulge that you gave up over a year ago? What is it? When did you quit? Why?
Smoking. I quit about eight years ago. I got sick of feeling like shit all the time, and it was getting pricey (I smoked Dunhills).

Eat McDonalds. Sometimes I get a jones for a Big Mac, and I just cave in.

4. What is the most generous gift you have ever given?

5. What is your favorite thing to cook for yourself alone?
Microwave tamales. I normally don't cook for myself.

Down to three, finally: work, cell and home.

The avocado green counters and harvest gold appliances. Can you tell I grew up in the 70s?

55. Let's see what we can find here.
1. What was your favorite movie of 2005?

Do you mean new film? If so it would have to be Narnia as it's the only one I saw, in fact the immenent release of Brokeback Mountain is going to mean the almost unheard of two trips to the cinema within a month.

2. Is there a vice in which you used to regularly indulge that you gave up over a year ago? What is it? When did you quit? Why?

Not really, I tend to collect vices more the give them up.

3. What's the most unethical thing you do on a regular or semi-regular basis?

Don't know whether it's strictly unethical, or just very bad - but bitch and back-bite.

4. What is the most generous gift you have ever given?

Define generous - I'll happily spend fairly large amounts on money on people, but I perceive generosity as being removed from that in many cases.

5. What is your favorite thing to cook for yourself alone?

Probably have to be a fairly simple pasta sauce - tomato base and made with oodles of love (if you love food, it loves you back by tasting wonderful).

6. What is your favorite thing to cook for others?

Presuming we mean people that I like - whatever they want, I'm pretty flexible in the kitchen and like to make folk things which they like.

7. What are you wearing?

Still my night-wear - got a dash of a nasty cold here, and so have been in bed all day.

8. How many phone numbers do you have? (work, cell, home...)

Home, mobile, work.

9. How many email addresses do you have?

I think 4 - one work, the personal.

10. What do you remember most about your childhood home?

We moved many times which mitigates against strong memories - however I do remember at one house the neighbour literally preened his garden, only ever going on the lawn in his slippers, and we had some fruit-trees in our garden; my sister and I would throw half eaten apples &c. over the hedge onto his pristine lawn. (Naughty T.J., very naughty T.J.)

62. Hello Fellow Siwash
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 03:54 PM by new_beawr
1. Favorite Movie - The Aristocrats

2. Vice - Gave Up Reefer, Quit altogether about Four Years Ago (and pretty much quit when my wife got pregnant the first time) because I just didn't care to be "altered" any more. I am exceptionally content and happy and healthy these days....(knock wood)

3. Unethical Behavior - I Drive a Gas Guzzler, an Infiniti M45, 364 Horsepower - vroom vroom....

4. Generous Gifts - I gave Ten Grand to Knox one year, I gave my wife my entire collection of Grateful Dead T-Shirts, collected over some 17 years, for our first Christmas together.

5. Meal for Me - NY Strip Steak

6. Meal for Others - (Real) Barbecued Ribs - slow, hickory smoked and the source of two vegetarian conversions......

7. I'm Wearing Jeans, Birkenstocks, a Bean Polo shirt and a navy blue hoodie

8. Phone Numbers - Two, Cell and Home - I work at home

9. E-mail addresses - eight

10. I don't really have a single childhood home, my Dad was in the Military and was also being sent through college, so we lived all over the place as he got his B.S, M.S. and PhD all pretty much straight. I immensely, and I really mean it, enjoyed growing up on College Campuses in the 60's and 70's. We lived on campus in Bloomington and Indianapolis, Indiana and Chapel Hill, NC. We lived in New Orleans (actually Metarie) while my Dad attended Tulane for his PhD. Basically, I had the run of several Campuses and tons of other kids with which to play. I also used to go see the UNC Men's Basketball team practices....

2) No, I have all the same vices. LOL I've gotten so used to them, it would be like abandoning an old friend.
3) Sneak books into the house so hubby doesn't realize how much $$ I spend at the bookstore. I have a system : co - mingle them with library books, then when I'm ready to take the free ones back, put the others on the bookshelf. Worked so far. hee, hee.
4) My time to help someone out. I can be really stingy with my time. All those books to read.
5) A package of macaroni and cheese. And eat the whole thing. Maybe I ought to think about that for question #2 next year.
6) I try not to cook for others. But when I do, I go for something Middle Eastern or Mediterranean. Something with rice or pasta. Or chili - I make kick-ass chili.
7) Grey flannel sweats

When we moved to JP, I had to share with my sister. I hated to share my room.

98. I'll Play
1. What was your favorite movie of 2005? I didn't see anything in the movie houses this year.

2. Is there a vice in which you used to regularly indulge that you gave up over a year ago? What is it? When did you quit? Why? Nothing

3. What's the most unethical thing you do on a regular or semi-regular basis? Murder for hire. Kidding! I'm kidding! Probably it's just talking behind my irritating neighbor's back.

My wife's engagement ring. I had nothing when i bought it.

99. 1. F9/11 (saw it after the first of the year)
only movie I saw this year: "March of the Penguins", at Mom's insistence in our hotel room over Chris, um, the holidays. A worthy runner-up, I suppose, but it could have used more cowbell.

2. I haven't actually quit so much as suspended it until I can find a less totalitarian work situation. :smoke:

3. Cut in front of people at bus stops. Yes, little old ladies, too. Big city dwellers may be surprised to learn that Honolulu buses can be as crowded as the real thing; I have watched three or four in a row go by, already packed like human sardine cans. :grr:

4. Probably the koa wood framed mirror I once gave to Mom the supermodel :eyes: .
(Koa is a rare native Hawaiian hardwood related to acacia.)

5. Zatarain's black beans and rice (the Japanese-owned store down the street doesn't carry the red beans. Go figure!)

6. Me? Cook for others?! It's not so much that I object, it's that they do!

7. Who are you, Carson from Queer Eye? :-) Yup, you got me: white Gap knit shirt, khakis, brown shoes from Macy's.

8. Two. Work, and home. No cell. (I do happen to have an extra; would you like one? :-) )

9. Four: work, personal, state agency, and the one that came with my dialup that I haven't been able to get into for six weeks because they sold out, that probably has 2,000 spam in it by now. :grr:

10. Which one? Most often it would be the trails or woodlands nearby; one in Conn. backed right up to an honest-to-Pete marsh.
