Any Soulseek users here? Help a newbie?

I've just spent the morning trying to find my way around Soulseek and even worked my way through the detailed tutorial. But I'm absotively LOST.

I know any kind soul who responds will need to know specifics, but I've got to get my vehicle inspected and it's already mid pm here, so I likely won't be checking back in for a bit....

Thanks in advance to any and all who reply. If you do reply, pehaps indicate if a PM would be ok.

Finally, in return I can offer beginner to mid-level advice on MIDI and synths, if that's yr cuppa.

1. What, exactly, do you need to know?

Basic stuff?
Like, click search files, enter term, hit search. Double click file to download, right click and click download containing folder if its a full album you want.

To dictate where it saves to, go in to options->file sharing configuration
You can also set up what folders you want to share there

WIshlist lets you set up terms you want the program to autosearch for you on a regular basis (hard to find things) and will then pop up with stuff when found

Chat rooms are good places to find people with the same musical interests as you, you can right click on any user and choose to Browse Files (if they have open download set up, not just people on friends lists) and browse any and all shared files they have.

I don't know what the problem was before. Got nothing but "Waiting for files" or "Error reading files". DL'ed client again and things seem to be working. (I thought I didn't have "privleges" yet or something....)

Another question from my previous experience this morning persists, however. I'm on abother board in which folks say "check in my slsk 'demos' folder; I'm 'bigdawg411'. Or they'll say "I'm 'TonyT' in the '+underwolrd+' room."

I don't know how to properly search for rooms and/or users. That is, I open up rooms and I don't see any +underworld+ room listed. Likewise, I don't understand how to search for a specific user outside the context of rooms. How can I search for TinyT by name? Or the +underworld+ room?

8. Well

You can go in to view and click 'view user list' or 'view rooms list'
Right click in the user list and select add user, enter the name you've been given

Right click in the rooms list and click refresh list then scroll through to find the one mentioned

5. To 'find' a user

Right click on the userlist ----> add user ----> type in their name. Make sure you use the exact capitalization (if any) and spelling of the name. There's not really any way to 'find' anyone, or to join a specific room other than through the rooms list.

As to your connection issues when searching, you probably need to configure your router (if you're behind one) or firewall or whatever. Go to options ----> General options ----> test firewall and router settings. This will tell you if you're config'd properly or if you need to futz with stuff. There's also some stuff in the FAQ on how to do that if you're unsure.

To search for rooms, go to the list at the bottom left corner. It's always a good idea 'refresh' the room list before searching.

6. Hey thanks, dolo amber

Maybe just a bit more info on the rooms thing would help. I'm on a board just today and they said to check in '+ultraworld+' room. But I don't see it. What does that mean?

And when I did a search on a name, it came up w/ open wing icon. Right clicked to browse file, but got error message again. Like I said above, just experiment after re-installing client had me DL'ing into the proper folder in know time.

I will check on the router isse as you suggested, but in the meantime, does the ability to see some users folders but get this error mssg from others mean anything? (I gather this isn't the user's list blocking me as I've seen that....)

And for clairy on my end, the reason I'm so interested in users vs titles is that folks are making their own stuff they've recorded available. Like I said, they just say "Find my demos folder on slsk; I'm omfug99"

BTW, is that the Bjork robot thingy in yr avatar? If not, what? Whatever it is it makes a lasting impression.

11. I found your room

Not that that helps you any, but still... :D

Go to rooms list. Right click, refresh. Wait a mo'...it takes a minute. Then click "rooms" so that they come up in alpha/symbolic order instead of by number of users. ((+ultraworld+)) is right near the top. There's shitload of rooms, and a lot of them have weirdo names, so it takes some getting used to. ;)

I like my wee techno baby too...I don't remember even where I got it. :D

I would have never have gotten around to refreshing the list. I wonder what the deal is w/ that, i.e., what principle is at work that made the intial 100 or so show up but not this one?

Anyhow, my main hurdle has been overcome thanks to you. Like I said, I've already seen tons of nmaes from my list there.
