Should the movie The 40 Year Old Virgin be on anyone's top ten? |
|
This was the worst piece of crapola movie I've seen in a long time. Take out the fucks and the sex references and you have almost nothing. And this is why I don't listen to Roeper's movie recommendations. So many films and he names this one as one in his top 10?

But in terms of empty sex jokes, nothing compares to "Family Guy"...
Maybe there is a reason. But I probably doubt there is one.
It is odd since both of them gave "Serenity" two thumbs up. So there's a sign of hope...

4. I thought it was funny. Not brilliantly or unforgettably funny, |
|
but I enjoyed it. I will concede, however, that I'm easily amused and often enjoy sophomoric humor, as long as Adam Sandler isn't involved.

It wasn't totally awful, but I don't think it was "Top Ten" material at all. I really wanted to like it, since I loved the show Freaks and Geeks and its producer (I think) was the guy behind that show, in addition to it featuring one of the main characters from that show. But it just wasn't all that good IMHO. Like you said, not a whole lot beyond sex jokes. In terms of raunchy comedies, Wedding Crashers beat it hands down.

Top 10 Movies of All Time? Of 2005? New on DVD?
Personally, I thought it was way funny. And what's wrong with sex jokes? That's the genre of movie it is. Seriously, look at the title. Were you expecting an in-depth discussion of quantum physics?

but I certainly wouldn't have put it on my "Top Ten List".
Whatever. But hey, to each, their own.

It was a great movie first because Steve Carell absolutely rocked in this movie and came off quite believable as a 40-year old virgin. Sure there were a ton of "fucks" and sex references (hell, it's about a virgin) but it was something I could relate to more as a 40-year gal (ok, not a virgin) trying to find love & sex out there in today's world.
I haven't done so yet, but I'm probably going to buy a copy of this DVD for my own. The best scene was when he had his chest wax. What's amazing about that scene - they were actually waxing his chest which really is that furry.
It's a great movie and I was upset that Carell didn't get a best actor nod in the Musical/Comedy category for the Golden Globes

|
I wouldn't mind her seeing this movie. In my opinion, it really does present the message that it's just fine and even desirable to "save yourself" for "the One". (And this, by the way, is from someone who saved himself for "the One".) I'm sorry that you found the medium to be a little rough in regards to language, etc., but that's really the message the movie presents. At least, that's how I perceived it.

39. the "message" amidst the garbage. |
|
The message of saving yourself for the "one" is a personal decision and admirable if that is your personal morality. I still don't think that message while viewing the garbage was worth it and it doesn't rate one of the top ten films of 2005 in my opinion.

18. Watched the 'Widescreen Unrated' version about a week ago. |

I was doubled over during the chest waxing scene, mostly because of the expressions and comments of the actors in the background.
But overall, it was marginally better than 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes'.

particularly when it's less than 85 minutes long, and when it involves a cast of probably 50 actors that you have never heard of (and never will again) playing characters involved in at least 20 confusingly cross-cut subplots.

They both said there were so many good movies of 2005 that there should be another list 11-20.
Yeah and Virgin made it to Roeper's 10th place. Gads, someone from that film must have sent him a large fruit basket.

32. I thought it was the funniest movie I'd seen in a long time. |
|
I don't know about "top 10" material, but for a silly comedy, it was perfect.
Granted, I watched it sick in bed with the flu and running a fever, so maybe if I'd been in my "right mind" I would have had a different reaction. But I thought for what it was, it was brilliant. I especially loved the closing sequence from "Hair".

I enjoyed it! It's def not an Oscar fare but did find myself laughing out loud several times. That's all I expected from this flick.
The boyfriend and I rented several movies this weekend and this was the only one where we didn't feel as though we were watching a video game.

I think Steve Carell is hilarious. I think the second season of 'The Office' was way better than season 1.
I just didn't get into this movie as I expected I would.
Top Ten? No.
