Hit songs that will never be covered?
Inspired by hearing "I Think I'm in Love" by Eddie Money on the radio today. Haven't heard it since I saw him perform it on Solid Gold a hundred years ago, and I'm sure I never will again. By anyone.

My other pick: "We Built This City (on Rock and Roll)"

Whatchagot?

1. "Hotel California"
I just can't really imagine any other group taking it on.

Then again, I thought "American Pie" was the same way, and Madonna proved me wrong.

33. Interesting
I'm figuring their version would be in a much different style so would probably be cool re-interpretation to hear.

40. a much different style
and it's replaced the original in my mind to the degree that, when people mention hotel california, I think of that scene in the movie rather than the original track :)

It is a great song, though, in it's original as well as in its covered form :)

2. "Black Superman - Muhammad Ali" by Johnny Wakelin & the Kinshasa Band
Track Title: Black Superman - Muhammad Ali
Prime Artist: Johnny Wakelin & the Kinshasa Band

Billboard #25 single, 1975

http://www.cylist.com/List/400300165/Billboard-Top-40-Hits-1975.html

Written by: Johnny Wakelin
Lyrics:

This here's the story of Cassius Clay
Who changed his name to Muhammad Ali
He knows how to talk and he knows how to fight
And all the contenders were beat out of sight

Sing, Muhammad, Muhammad Ali
He floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee
Mohammed, the black superman
Who calls to the other guy I'm Ali catch me if you can

Now all you fight fans, you've got to agree
There ain't no flies on Muhammad Ali
He fills the arena wherever he goes
And everyone gets what they paid for

Muhammad, was known to have said
You watch me shuffle and I'll jab off your head
He moves like the black superman
And calls to the other guy I'm Ali catch me if you can

He says I'm the greatest the worlds ever seen
The heavyweight champion who came back again
My face is so pretty you don't see a scar
Which proves I'm the king of the ring by far

Sing, Muhammad, Muhammad Ali
He floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee
Mohammed, the black superman
Who calls to the other guy I'm Ali catch me if you can

Sing, Muhammad, Muhammad Ali
He floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee
Muhammad, the black superman
Who calls to the other guy I'm Ali catch me if you can

I'm Ali catch me if you can

7. "Ooga chucka, Ooga chucka...."
'I just got this feeling...
I-I-I-I-I am hooked on this feeling...'

Can't even remember the artist, but can't believe it would be covered. That whole ooga chucka thing alone ought to confine the song to the dustbin of music history.

From around the same time was a song about roller skates... "I got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a brand new key..." Also can't remember the song title or the artist (I was pretty young at the time of these awful seventy songs) - and can't believe anyone would think to cover this song either. Unless in parody, but for parody to work, folks have to remember the original which is doubtful.

9. Kinda funny, but
"Brand New Key" (by Melanie, I think in 1971) came suddenly into my consciousness yesterday and I had to sing it...while dressed as Elvis, no less. I hope nobody heard me.

"Hooked On A Feeling" was originally recorded by BJ Thomas (I think he wrote it) in 1970, or maybe '69, and those Blue Swede characters added the "hooka shaka" stuff when they did it around '74. I like the original (nice electric sitar work, too) and I tolerate the remake out of nostalgia... :-)

23. wow... didn't know anyone remembered the roller skate/key song
how funny that you were singing it yesterday.

Had no idea that the other song I recall was actually a cover. Makes a good rationale for No Covers! Would be interested in hearing the original.

Blue Swede, "Hooked on a Feeling". It was a cover of BJ Thomas' song.

They also did "Never My Love".

OOPS, Duplicate.

I'd vote for "Sister Ray" by The Velvet Underground

31. What's interesting is...
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 01:05 AM by last_texas_dem
...(and you may have already known this) it's actually a cover itself. The original 1969 version by B. J. Thomas was more of a standard pop song (though one of the few pop songs that features what I believe is a sitar) and made the Top Five when it was released. The cover by Blue Swede really cheesed it up with the "ooga chakas" but their version made #1.

I believe country singer Deana Carter took on "Brand New Key" a few years ago. I remember reading about it, but never heard her version. She has the sassy-cute thing going, so I figure it was pretty tongue-in-cheek.

ON EDIT: I should've read Forrest Gump's post right below before reiterating the same information he had already provided. Sorry 'bout that...

39. "Two Tickets to Paradise"
I'd be amazed if no one's ever covered a song so catchy and cheesy.

Now in the case of "Baby Hold on", I might have to agree with you on it being a blasphemy to cover a song so great. (The scary part is, I'm not even sure I'm saying this tongue-in-cheek!)

20. "Walking in a Winter Fundieland"
Won't be covered because I haven't wrote or performed the song yet. Goes to the tune of "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" but the day I record it don't rush out to download it - even for free. I'll tell you it's a recording that's definitely worth hitting away from your list.

Besides I sing as well as Bush's running of this country. (which means that someone actually might think I sing OK!)

Mark.

I don't know if this counts but I'm being serious here, I once sang that with a friend of mine's girlfriend on a karaoke machine in a bar. He was a party pooper who was embarassed to get up on stage even with like dozen people in the bar, so I went up and sang with her instead, We chose that song to pick at him and because the selection they had was terrible. Also because there was no screen to see the words and it was one of the only song we both knew most of the words to.
