For the USA in Canada like I see now. Aside from all the shit in politics... I'm going to the World Junior Hockey Championships. Canadian fans are packing the arena's... 17,000 people showing up to seemingly just boo the Americans. Tonight a guy was trying to do a promotion, he was on the jumbotron and behind him someone had a sign spelling out;

U
Suck
America

The crowd was cheering loudly and the guy asked the spectators to shows some hospitality and they all started booing him. The crowd was also completely going for the Chezch republic. At the end of the game, when they played the anthem, some booed, most just got up and left. Thank G. Dub and his wonderful diplomatic skills.

1. I feel bad.
I've seen that alot lately, too, and I'm embarrassed. True, GWB is a dolt, and the War in Iraq is an illegal invasion, but what does that have to do with Junior Hockey? We should be more respectful and receptive to those Americans who visit us; they're less likely to be the kinds of Archie Bunkers who support the War and the Chimperor.

4. Not just Canada
I read an article in my local paper last year. It was written by a college student who went to Germany for a year as part of an exchange program. She discovered that previously Germany had had a favorable opinion of the US, particularly during the years of the Clinton Administration. They saw Clinton as an all around great leader and highly approved of his policies. Not so of Bush and his policies. They see him as a dimwitted cowboy with a chip on his shoulder, despise the Iraq war fiasco, and have come to hate America. The writer noted seeing lots of anti-US graffiti and even disliking the idea of letting people know she was American because of the backlash she often faced.

GWB has truly effed it up for us in the eyes of the world.

6. Bah, it's always been like this at hockey games.
I've been a hockey fan since I was a kid and you guys have been booing our national anthem and acting like no-class assholes toward us for years. Especially the games in French Canada. It might be worse now but it's been there for years.

You don't even get the Juniors on TV down there. And we'd show a little class if your fucking nation was capable of it...EVER

How's this for class, I was at the USA/Canada game the other night, two Americna fans were beside me, whenever Canada scored a guy in a Team Canada Jersey would turn around and offer his hand... the US fans wouldn't take it.

25. Never heard that
in fact growing up around Boston seems to instill nearly as automatic impulse to stand at the Canadian anthem as for the US anthem :)

I would be very disappointed to here people boo the Canadian anthem.

I've only heard of Canadians booing the US anthem since the invasion of Afghanistan.

13. I'm talking NHL and International.
Watch any Habs game against an American team or any International Game. Fuck man, you guys were cheering for the fucking Russians over us and being unnecessarily brutal in the 96 World Cup. Don't tell me what I have and have not witnessed. The Canadian fans have been over-the-top vituperative toward us and our players for a long time, especially the French Canadians.

And our fans do show class toward your anthem. After being mercilessly booed in Toronto while the SSB played during the playoffs a few years ago the Islander fans retaliated by blowing the roof off the Coliseum singing "Oh Canada". What happened when they went back to Toronto? Boos again. Don't tell me about class. And don't blame what our asshole government does on our teams and citizens. A lot of us hate those bastards too.

Of course we booed you in 96 you were our top competition. I remember watchign a Canucks game shortly after 911, the cheers the crowd gave the US anthem were louder than for O'Canada.

17. Yes, that was nice.
For one brief moment we actually had the entire world on our side and this stupid Chimp does everything he can to erase it. Of course the whole purpose of the event was to give him that support but that's for another forum.

I've been to hundreds of games and I have never witnessed a full scale booing of Canada's anthem. Scattered idiots for sure but not the full on crowd. Hell, even here in Philly, back in the Broad Street Bully days when they played the Russians (and were the only NHL team to beat them), the fans stood in respect to the Soviet anthem and that was a fucking zoo of a crowd.

I just wish the booing would end altogether. I've always liked Canada and this just bothers me. I don't like seeing the politics brought into the games. Viciously booing a bunch of kids is terrible.

Off topic, Canada has certainly re-established themselves on the International stage as the country to beat. The U.S. seems to have peaked a long time ago as far as players. There are some young promising guys but most of the star kids are coming out of Canada again.

23. It makes me feel sad and ashamed
Our "shining city on a hill" has become an evil empire in the eyes of the world and I don't like it one bit. I've always been proud of my heritage - I'm a product of many segments of American society. My ancestors on my father's side came over here early, one of them signed the Declaration, I have ancestors who fought in the Revolution. In the 1800's one of them married an Irish immigrant and on my mother's side, her parents were Italian immigrants who came over after WWI.

I've always been proud of the fact that, though we've always had our faults and I've never been blind to them, the ideas the country was founded upon were solid and for the most part, we've kept moving toward fulfilling them. Now it seems we're going backwards and it makes me angry and sad.

Yeah, this administration scares the hell out of us, too. They ignore their own citizens because they only care about their corporate masters. We can change this but it's going to take a lot of work and a long time but sometimes it feels like we are pissing in the wind.

Thanks for your words of support! Please let your fellow Irish know we aren't all idiots here.

THE ARGUMENT ABOUT BOOING IS VERY FAMILIAR.THERE ARE TWO TEAMS IN BELFAST.ONE CALLED CLIFTONVILLE FC (THE REDS) AND THE OTHER CALLED LINFIELD(THE BLUES).ONE IS FOLLOWED BY CATHOLICS AND THE OTHER IS FOLLWED BY PRODESTANTS.THEY HATE EACHOTHER.THE CHANTS AT SOME OF THE MATCHES ARE FULL OF HATE.
OF COURSE THIS ALL STEMS FROM ARE HISTORY. I HAVE EVERY REASON TO HATE THE BRITISH BUT I DONT.
I'VE SEEN HATE,I KNOW WHAT IT IS,I KNOW WHAT IT HAS DONE TO MY PEOPLE AND STILL THE BICKERING GOES ON .DONT LET YOUR CANADIAN HEARTS OR AMERICAN HEARTS FALL FOR "MR.NASTY".

28. I really hate to see this, I've always felt Canadians were so warm to us.
But I'm not surprised, either considering the chimperator's diplomatic skills. I spent most of September in Italy being very careful not to wear my US citizenship on my sleeve - either literally or figuratively. No sense adding to the hostilities, I figure.
