EOG can be removed without too much disruption, just imbed something similar into the next step. However, if you remove something like "gnome applets" the flow would be hugely disrupted. That is more of a node than the EOG. EOG cannot run things without the other nodes, but the other nodes can probably function without EOG, which is just a figurehead that cannot catch its breath for all the hot air that it is expelling.
