NFL Teams Go On Coach-Firing Frenzy
<snip>

NEW YORK -- Just three NFL head coaches were fired after last season, including a pair of interim coaches.

Five head coaches already have been dismissed over the past two days, with Dom Capers, Mike Sherman, Mike Martz and Jim Haslett being told to find other jobs Monday.

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson decided to fire Haslett after six seasons and a 45-51 record. The Saints went 3-13 after being relocated from the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina.

The St. Louis Rams have told Martz he won't be back, although Martz wasn't around for much of the season. He was able to coach just five games because of a heart ailment, leaving the team in the hands of interim coach Joe Vitt. Martz went 2-3 this season and was 53-32 after becoming the Rams' head coach in 2000.

The Green Bay Packers booted Sherman out the door following the team's worst season in 15 years. Sherman was 57-39 as the Packers' head coach, posting five straight winning seasons before a rash of injuries led to a 4-12 campaign.

And the Houston Texans have told Capers his services are no longer needed. The Texans went 2-14 this season to earn the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Capers was 18-46 with Houston.

On Sunday, Mike Tice learned of his dismissal just minutes after his Minnesota Vikings completed a 9-7 season with a 34-10 win over the Chicago Bears. Vikings owner Zygi Wilf says he gave Tice the quick hook because he didn't want him twisting in the wind.

1. A Sign Of A Bad Organization Is One Where They Fire The Coach
every three to four years, or less. Bill Cowher may not have a SB ring, but his team is in the playoffs almost every year, and as a fan, that's all you want is the chance to win it all every year.

Also, very few teams lose because of the coaching. They lose because of injuries, talent level, and plain bad luck.

5. I agree
I don't understand why Haslett was fired. We all know they are going to move the team anyway. Why not keep him on next year and then when they move to LA, get a new coach. I'm trying to figure out why Mike Sherman was fired. This was the first losing season he had. Or is it that they want to make Brett Favre retire. I heard that he didn't want to play for another coach.

Even though I am not a Steelers fan, you gotta admire the fact that they keep Cowher around. I think he has coached more Pro Bowls than anything. just kidding. I think it was 3 years ago when they had a horrible season, but the next year Tommy Maddox brought them back. What if they would have fired him after their horrible season????

6. Haslett Is The Perfect Example of What I'm Talking About
There's a coach that just needs to be in a more supportive environment. Given time, he could become one of the best coaches in football.

7. let's hope he gets another Coaching Job
He was a good coach who had to deal with a lot this year. I find it offensive that they let him go. What was the reason again?? Oh yeah - they wanted to take the team in a different direction

8. Yeah, like the Lions
God they suck. All the money in the world, rabid fans, beautiful stadium, clueless owner who hired a clueless GM/President.

4. I hope that Schottenheimer gets it too! "Martyball" is not working here.
He hasn't changed his ultra-conservative playbook in 25 years. Opposing coaches and defenses know what he's going to call.

He should be fired for playing Brees as long as he did in a meaningless game that they were already getting blown out in. Brees messed up his shoulder and will face surgery. He's the "franchise player" and may never be the same.

Buh Bye Marty!
