NEW YORK -- Just three NFL head coaches were fired after last season, including a pair of interim coaches.
Five head coaches already have been dismissed over the past two days, with Dom Capers, Mike Sherman, Mike Martz and Jim Haslett being told to find other jobs Monday.
New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson decided to fire Haslett after six seasons and a 45-51 record. The Saints went 3-13 after being relocated from the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina.
The St. Louis Rams have told Martz he won't be back, although Martz wasn't around for much of the season. He was able to coach just five games because of a heart ailment, leaving the team in the hands of interim coach Joe Vitt. Martz went 2-3 this season and was 53-32 after becoming the Rams' head coach in 2000.
The Green Bay Packers booted Sherman out the door following the team's worst season in 15 years. Sherman was 57-39 as the Packers' head coach, posting five straight winning seasons before a rash of injuries led to a 4-12 campaign.
And the Houston Texans have told Capers his services are no longer needed. The Texans went 2-14 this season to earn the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Capers was 18-46 with Houston.
On Sunday, Mike Tice learned of his dismissal just minutes after his Minnesota Vikings completed a 9-7 season with a 34-10 win over the Chicago Bears. Vikings owner Zygi Wilf says he gave Tice the quick hook because he didn't want him twisting in the wind.
