I was part of a tour group that went to the damn library some years ago. The docents drank the koolaid, and basically said that the tape recorder "malfunctioned" and that accounted for the missing parts of the tapes.

yeah right!

58. Sounds like my visit as a child to
the Holocaust museum. I had to be carried out of the place. There weren't many exhibits then, a few black and white photos here and there, actual clothes worn by survivors, etc. The stories of a few survivors that were present and spoke to us was what did me in.

Moved me to hysteria--being a little kid that wasn't hard.

And for the record to the OP, my district has a democratic congresswoman, dem assembly person and a dem state senator

What you don't pay in energy costs elsewhere in the country, you might pay in property. It isn't for everyone but it is a good place to live. If you want snow ...it's up in the mountains...if you don't....you don't have to deal with it. You have the countryside, desert, beach and mountains all within an hour or so. Crime is relatively low and you can dine outside at cafe's all but about 2-3 weeks a year.

We don't have to spend 8 months out of the year waiting for warmth.

65. Depends on what part
If you move to a city like Newport Beach or Irvine you'll find yourself well outnumbered whereas if you settle around such towns as Anaheim, Santa Ana or Laguna Beach you'll likely feel much more amongst your element.

Or, depending on what part of OC hubby's job is in, consider Long Beach. It's quite liberal, has a hell of a lot more charm than OC, and is within a reasonable commuting range to North and Central OC (where I work as well). Housing and rent is also cheaper on the whole.
