Name some inspirational, uplifting movies.
I'm updating my Netflix queue and I'm looking for some good movies about the power of people to make positive change in the world. I wanna start 2006 on a positive, energizing note. So hit me -- what do you have?!

5. 'The Rookie'
Helps if you like baseball, but it's not necessary.

True story, too — although in Morris' actual debut with Tampa Bay, he struck out Royce Clayton on four pitches, not three. Clayton fouled off the 0-2 pitch.

Sorry for the spoiler, but these things are important, dammit. :silly:

and any of Robert Redford's movies from the '70's and 80's. Starring or directing or both.
And one of my favorites about the power of family love from, of all people, that scoundrel Woody Allen "Radio Days".

48. Not necessarily a great movie
but Secret of My Success is a lot of fun!

Also:

A Little Princess (NOT the Shirley Temple version, but the Cuaron directed one)
My Secret Garden
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Enchanted April
the Harry Potter films if you haven't already seen them
Trading Places (Eddie Murphy, Jamie Lee Curtis and Danny Aykroyd)

Some I haven't seen, so I'm not positive about them

I've heard Lorenzo's Oil is very good
as well as
Shawshank Redemption

That's all I can think of right now.

Talk about something that scores off the charts on the life-affirming scale. Recommended for people who haven't had a vacation in a while, and/or are suffering from a broken heart, too much spinelessness, soulless ambition, or terminal self-absorption. Unfortunately, there's no DVD in most regions.

Then there are...

Babette's Feast
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
The Farmer's Daughter
The Talk of the Town
To Kill a Mockingbird
Secrets and Lies
The Third Miracle

On edit: How could I possibly forget Shall We Dance? I mean the Japanese version, the Japanese version, the Japanese version. Did I mention the Japanese version?

Anyway, it's one of the most disarming films I have ever seen. Imagine a film that manages to laugh at its characters and at the same time makes your heart ache for them.

56. Try over at
http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com

I've been referring a lot of people over to them. You get discounts on DVDs and they also don't charge for shipping. I spend about $50 a month there, and their prices on boxed sets are esepcially good.

For the most part, if it exists on DVD they can get it or already have it.

52. I had a look at my DVD's and I couldn't stop saying "no"
to the question of "is it uplifting or inspirational?"

Goddam movies! :-)

GATTACA is the best I have though.

I'd recommend Rob Roy, but it's like a nice lukewarm shower after being keel-hauled in
polluted waters. Best swordfight ever though. :-)
