OK, I don't know if the DU mods are going to want to pull this post
because it is about "2" banned DUers. Right upfront.

This involves the person that made up two screennames...and posted as two homosexual men in a relationship...complete with photo threads, and details of jobs...etc.

Am I the ONLY one that thinks this person is brilliant, and might have been using a message board to learn to develop characters for a writing project?

I have thought this for a long time, but other DUers seemed so very upset by it that I never mentioned it.

It took a helluva lot of talent to keep "two guys" going on DU...I believed them, too. The bookstore and cat were my hooks.

I would LOVE to know the "rest of the story" on that one; I cannot imagine what other gains this person would have had from screwing around on a message board-

1. I dunno if it will be pulled,
because I suspect I am not the only one who has no clue as to what you mention.

6. I thought about that too
but, I actually met a true split personality person when I was a paramedic...my understanding is that while the personalities "know" about each other...they don't interact like they are involoved with each other.

Anyway...I was just always fascinated as hell by the story of one person pretending to be two. I don't think I could be that clever.

22. I worked w/ one in a state hospital.
They might be aware of each other but they rarely do interact(usually only under therapy).
And the poster(s) mentioned above fascinate me too.

11. That was definitely my take on it.
Insane with a vivid imagination. If he was really brilliant, he wouldn't have given himself away in the end (and he wouldn't have needed to plagiarize stuff either), even though it did take a while for people to become really suspicious.

8. It does take substantial cleverness.
I think many of us simply smart too much at being made to feel foolish to grant that.

But I believe it also possible that the person you refer to simply had a pathological need for attention they did not feel capable or worthy of without the aid of a phantasie life.

Either way, that does not nullify the tremendous amount of creativity inherent in that phantasie. I hope the person you refer to does indeed find the inspiration to write. Likely it would be an avenue to a better form of genuine attention.

convention in Union Sq , NYC (DUer Amaya was with me) with Vets for Peace and other similar groups with a picture of his "nephew" who had gotten killed in IRAQ.the poor guy was, in fact, a fallen soldier, but it wasn't his nephew. An enterprising DUer did some research and verified this. I exchanged PMs with the "both" of them prior to doing this.

17. I don't think he/she was particularly brilliant
Though we all know that there are people who are not what they portray themselves to be on the internets, most people on a message board will pretty much accept a person's story if it's not absurdly "out there". As long as you keep it that way, you're not liable to get caught because no one is going to go to any great lengths to disprove you.

As for it taking a lot of talent, I don't see that either. People make up internet personas every day - it's just another way of playing a game of let's pretend.

I have an acquaintance who truly believes that I'm close friends with a well-known rock star. I innocently threw out a remark about having his telephone number one day - purely in jest - and this guy took me seriously. So I let him believe it because it seemed funny but it took on a life of its own and for the past several years, he has believed it. I wish I'd never begun because it would be very awkward at this late date to tell him I was just pulling his leg and I know it's going to come back to bite me in the ass but the point is, this was not a dumb person who believes this and it took very little effort to convince him and keep him convinced. And that was in person with someone I actually know and not in a fairly anonymous place like a message board.

Don't give too much credit to that person.

I hated that jerk with a purple passion. Still do. And no, I saw no indication of brilliance. Just someone who likes pushing peoples' buttons. He was good at that.

And I seriously doubt that we are rid of the schmuck.

30. Yes, I have
But I won't share the name, on the chance that I'm wrong. But that aside, he invested too much time and energy of his own to just walk away when they banned him. I'd be very surprised if he just gave up and moved on. He enjoyed stirring up the shit too much.
