Poll question: how much money would drastically change your life?
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 06:42 PM by LSK
If you were to inherit a certain amount of money, what amount would change your life?

What amount would free you from whatever obligations you have allow you to live a life you really want?

Im not exactly talking about living lifestyles of the rich and famous, but I am talking about something that would change your job/lifestyle/what you do with your life.

This is inspired by the National Treasure post.

1. $50,000 would change my life.
All bills would be paid. I could live a pretty good life with a sudden infusion of $50,000 (though, of course, I'd still work)

2. A million would be good...
I could take care of outstanding bills, fix up the house, invest some for my kid's college, and be a lot pickier about what sorts of jobs I take.

3. $250,000 would be enough
It would payoff my mortgage and give me some extra $. Then I could get a cheap job just to pay for food and I would have time to do (and figure out) what I really want.

to invest, live off the interest, if sparingly at first, and then do something else with your life without being tied to a paycheck.

8. Nearly any amount of money could change my life in some way
but I don't think any amount of money would change my life in a dramatic way.

Sure, if I came into a substantial amount of cash, I'd put some away for LeftyKid's education and maybe get a nicer vehicle, but my needs are modest and mostly met by my current small income so most of the rest I'd save or give away when I saw a need.

$10,000 or $10,000,000 it wouldn't make all that big a difference to me, except a that if I could afford it I think I'd consider buying a house.

10. Over 1 million would change how I'd live
About 100K would go to pay off student loans and upcoming tuition bills. I'd give about 300-500K to my parents for paying for college and whatever mortgage/car payments they have remaining.

The rest of the initial million would go toward a place of my own, possibly a car, and/or savings for the future. Only the amount I'd get beyond that would really change my life.

If I was really financially secure I'd try to become a full time political operative/activist and/or candidate for office in the future. (I'm only 25).

11. I voted $10 mil.
Not necessarily b/c I'm greedy...I just don't want to ever have to work again.

I'd pay off my bills & buy a modest home to live in. Just a normal middle class lifestyle is all I'd want to live. Rest of the money would be socked away into CD's & I could live off the interest. Of course I'd use some $ to help friends, family members, and the less fortunate.

12. Another 50K voter here.
Just enough to pay off the not student loans, buy a working car, and put some away for a rainy day/help me afford some things I've been avoiding (like dental work, a wardrobe...).

13. I went for the 10 mil.
100 thou would mean I could stop working - and is more than I need to be 'happy'. Given my age,I don't need a large sum to live on - 'live' being the operative word - so, I could keep renting this apt.& do some traveling and maybe a small amount of good.

OTH, 10 million would make a huge difference in what I could do for others. (I'd probably stay in the apt.- but remodel it and/or try to buy it). It'd also give me the opportunity to write a much more interesting will. :)

14. I went for the big bucks...$10 million, and here's why
$10 million...a mil to my mom, set for life. A mil to my bro, set for life. A mil to my animal rescue to by acreage and a small facility. A mil to sit in trust for that rescue. The interest would pay any shortcomings in donations for food, vetting, etc. The extra would go towards a spay/neuter clinic. A mil goes to buy my house and sit in trust, earning interest to pay the bills. I still have $5 million left. That goes in trust. Nowhere near my name. The interest would be donated as I/the trust saw fit. The principal, never touched. That leaves me free, with a whole lot of time.

I'd spend this winter onboard Sea Shepherd's ship, The Farley Mowat, intervening in the whaling taking place in the Antarctic. This spring/summer, I'd be at every big protest against the regime. I never have to work again, and I have bail money, so what do I care? The fall would be time to rest. Next winter, I'm on the floes in Canada, protecting seals with Sea Shepherd again. I'd spend every second volunteering where I was needed. Living.

15. I chose $250,000
Sure I'd like millions so I could stop working, live my dreams and do great things for others. However I could change my life with much less. 250K would allow me to pay off all of my bills and finance my grad school education. I could also take time off during grad school so I could focus solely on my studies. I would get done with school, and get on with my desired career, so much quicker that way.
