I saw Frank McCourt on Book TV. He must have been a great teacher. I can't get enough of Lynn Russ. If you liked Eats, Shoots and Leaves, you'll love Talk to the Hand.

As soon as it gets here, I'll be reading "1776" by David McCullough.

I'm also going to read "The Elements of Style Illustrated" by William Strunk and E.B. White.....I plan to begin writing in a more serious way than I have up to now.

Bought it on New Years' Day, finished it this evening. It was great. Much darker than, and different from, the musical.

19. It's frusrating sometimes, what makes me sad is not really hearing "mama"
after all this time. Once in awhile when he's reeeeal crabby, I'll get a whiny "maaaaa," but he prefers to sign. He babbles alot so he may be saying things he just can't articulate well enough for us to understand. He's my sunbeam, though, no matter how much of a pain in the ass it is to get him to tell me he wants a cracker! :loveya:

32. If he is able to sign you already have something good there
It shows he is at least capable of some form of communication. Depending on his level of MR he may be very limited in his ability to verbalize, or just may take much longer than the average child. Many of the individuals I have worked with over the years have never developed speech capacity sadly enough, and many others have shown no aptitude for sign language either.

42. We're able to tell that he can understand a great deal,
it's just the expressive language that's a bear with him. He can follow relatively complex directions and remembers things without too much prompting. His hearing is normal as long as his ears stay clear. His speech therapist (who is absolutely great!) is at something of a loss to explain why he won't verbalize much. He's very noisy- I'm afraid he may just have a real problem with articulation.

48. "A Taxonomy of Barnacles" and it's really good so far.
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 10:37 AM by jane_pippin
It's about an eccentric Manhattan family of 6 daughters who are issued a challenge by their father to immortalize the family name. The nature vs. nurture debate, (the mother and father were obsessed with the debate throughout their lives together), threads through the story in interesting, quirky ways. It's got a Royal Tennenbaums feel to it so far--sort of a modern fairy tale for adults, I suppose. If you need a break from current events or heavy reading but still want to read something smart, try this one.

Obviously, my choice in reading is a bit less serious and intellectual than most here.

73. "Phantom Lady" and "1491"
I'm on the home stretch of Phantom Lady (great 40's noir by Cornell Woolrich -- been on a noir kick lately) and as soon as that's done it's on to 1491 to learn a lot more about the actual history of the Americas.

82. Dogfish Head just opened a brewpub in my neighborhood, and ...
I took my parents there when they were visiting here for the holidays.

Food was good, and the pints were only $3 during happy hour! We sampled a variety.

83. "The War Zone" by Alexander Stuart
I saw the Tim Roth directed film a couple of months ago and picked up a copy of the novel soon after. It's probably not the happiest way to usher in new beginnings, but it is a very good book.

85. 2 books
"Why Don't You Fly", by Christopher J. A. Smith. My younger sister lives in the UK and is a friend of his. He wrote this after cycling 16,000 miles through Eurasia. www.cycleuktochina.com

The other is "Lincoln's Melancholy. How Depression Challenged a President and Fueled his Greatness" by Joshua Shenk.

I've got some other fluffy books to fill in too. Sappy, happily-ever-after stuff.

95. Several
I've been working on my (still growing) stack of books that I haven't read. Just when I start to make a dent, I get some new ones. At the end of '05/ beginning of '06 I finished Jimmy Carter's new one. So far this year I've read Vonnegut's new A Man w/o a Country and J.D. Salinger's Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenters/ Seymour. (I wanted to read the last of his stuff that I hadn't gotten to; I liked the first story a lot and ended up liking the second one, although it was more difficult to get into than any of his others have been for me.) I'm now working on Joseph Heller's Something Happened which is hard to put down but is also making me wonder if I'll be able to complete it w/o sinking into some sort of major depressive funk!

97. I have to start on the many books I bought w/ my gift certificate
I think that I'll start off with fiction. I have Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire (I already read Wicked and the sequel), Miracle at St. Anna by James McBride, and a collection of three novels by Paulo Coelho. The last book that I finished last year was Blessed Are the Cheesemakers by Sarah-Kate Lynch.

Very good 'What If' book.

Starts out at the end of the Revolution. One problem: The Americans lost. George Washington is about to be hung, and Ben Franklin has gone underground with his newspapers. Pretty interesting read.

and lots of non-fiction : the social/historical histories of houses and customs pertaining to family life and social structures within, more about crows and ravens (the most beautifulist of birds. there is the cardinal, however, that takes my breath away) and cultural history of st. petersburg. fun, fun reading!
