I am watching CNN in the background and the scenes of the relatives and friends of the miners walking away from the church is so sad . The man being interviewed right now on CNN says he felt like passing out - I feel the same .

21. That is horrible.
It also proves that the media will go to press with ANYTHING for the sake of viewership. It reminds me of that Daily Show episode where they showed the montage of reporters during the Miami airport shooting stating "we don't know anything" for hours.

They knew within 20 minutes that there were not 12 people alive, but they kept quiet about it?? And the Pres. of the mining company says "let's keep this in perspective"??? :wtf:

30. No sane person would knowingly do this..
The best I can come up with is they might have talked to the one person who got separated from the group (I assume this is the case). He thought the others were alive, albeit in a separate location. And he told them about the survivors (maybe they were alive at the time). Or he knew they were dead and thought inflating the numbers would get him help in a more timely manor.

I'm just guessing, I don't know..

27. Well, the mine had been inspected and cited with 49 violations.
Apparently, this happened recently. Yet, they still sent the miners in. I don't know enough about the situation, but sure as hell would be fuming if my family was sent into an unsafe mine.

31. Didn't lightning have something to do with the explosion?
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 03:56 AM by Whoa_Nelly
But what exloded? escaped gases? Were safety violations present that a lightning strike could bring it all down? Or is this an isolated freak event?

on edit:
Don't know much if anything about mining safety regs :shrug:

29. Okay, now wait just a damned minute
CNN had a mine official (albeit second-hand), the governor of West Virginia and a member of Congress, as well as family members, saying 12 were alive.

In journalism, that's called "confirmation." You go with it.

32. So, who is responsible for putting out the false information?
And where is the accountability?
Now the governor's office is saying that they in no way confirmed it.

33. From the original story:
TALLMANSVILLE, West Virginia (CNN) -- Twelve of 13 miners who had been trapped underground for more than 36 hours are alive and were being brought out early Wednesday for treatment, officials and family members said.

<snip>

"Believe in miracles," said West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, who had expressed optimism throughout the ordeal.

"Twelve miners alive," said Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-West Virginia. She said she did not know where the 12 were found or their condition.

<snip>

A friend of one of the miners told CNN's Anderson Cooper that a mine official had come out and said, "We got 12 alive!" The friend, who did not give his name, said rescue crews were then going into the mine.

34. Thanks, O.E.
I think I know you from a "testy" site? :) (CommaHerder here)

All CNN and others did was show what was happening, what was said, as it happened. Even the W. Va. governor appeared to give confirmation to the 12 alive. When you have such confirmation, as O.E. said, you run with it.

That said, the whole event just makes me sick, sick, sick. WHY did that company not come out when they knew after 20 minutes that not all had survived and correct the news? They're saying they wanted to know the whole story for sure - BULLSHIT. I don't buy it. Why wait 3 hours to correct it? You come out and say "That's not accurate. We don't know what exactly IS accurate, but all 12 being alive is not accurate. More as soon as we know." It's that f-cking simple. Those company officials where chickenshit at best and total liars at worst. Some people are saying the mine president told the families, himself, right there in the church, he would be bringing the miners to the church. THAT is the story the reporters need to pursue, and I hope they are.

I feel sooo awful for all those families.
Moni

35. From what I read online, it appears that the rumor
started that 12 were alive when cell phone calls were overheard. Apparently, the word came out that they were checking the vitals of the 12 they had found and it was mis-interpreted that the twelve were alive.

My daughter's friend found out her dad was dead by overhearing a cell phone call, so this is very plausible to me.

Very, very sad. I was hoping to wake up to good news.
