It's amazing how much they can charge for steak at restaurants. |
|
My husband and I went to eat last night at a steak house. The cheapest steak on the menu was $30.00. Of course he wanted the $45 steak. Just crazy! That's it. I just wanted to bitch about the price of steaks. It was a strip if that matters. I prefer T-bones.

so he could eat all he wants! He's not picky. But the meat was still fatty. I don't want a $50 piece of fat. I don't like going to this place, but we were meeting some family up there and we didn't get to pick the restaurant. Plus the steak doesn't come with any side items. Baked potatoes and other stuff are separate. And the baked potato is $5. I can't believe I paid that. But my mom did see George Clooney in there once when he was here filming O' Brother Where Art Thou. :shrug:

I can't even pick the best restaurant here, it depends on what you are looking for.
The Melting Pot (fondue) Fraziers (French) Second Empire (American/steak) Carvers Creek (steak) Casa Carbone (Italian -- I LOVE their pizzas!)

I usually only eat chicken at restaurants. My husband and I went out for my birthday and ate at a southwest restaurant our friends own and for fifty bucks (that our friends gave us in gift certificates!) we had drinks, an appetizer, and two VERY nice meals. I'm so cheap, I think I would run out the door if I had to pay $30 for a piece of meat. So was it dining ecstasy, or what, Shell?:9

The chicken was $17.50. It is just a simple grilled chicken breast. I got the appetizer called Tender Bites. It is the tender pieces of steak from the T-Bone. It is soooo good, but it is still $10.00. But I can never finish a whole steak. :shrug:

well she was in the process of cooking one when something popped out of the steak. It hit the ground and bounced and then rolled. She picked it up and asked me what I thought it was. "Looks like a BB or birdshot to me" (not that I am any ammo expert).
Yep sure enough we found a whole bunch of it in the steak. Apparently someone had shot up the cow with birdshot and it got all the way throught the system without anyone noticing it.
I took the steak back to the store. Did I get a gift certificate? NO store credit (I told the store manager off and we stopped shopping there).

I had a $45 steak once. It was good, but it was not worth $45. Frankly, I've had better steak at Bickford's. I had a much better steak in Vegas for $25.

over the past year even at the market. I prefer T-bones, Porterhouses and Ribeyes as well...more flavorful steaks...or a baseball cut filet.

although one thing I do like about getting steak out at certain places is you can get cuts you can't get at the market UNLESS you go to a butcher and have them cut specially

They're charging you for the wages they have to pay their waitstaff and cooks, the linen service, cleaning equipment to meet the specs of local constabulary, the overhead on the property, the amount they have to pay to insure a property that deals in superhot fires for 15 hours a day and could be spreading foodborne illness, fuel oil to heat and cook, etc...
If you want an inexpensive steak, buy one at the grocers and slap it on the grill at home.

All the political people and local celebs hang there. Plus some actual Hollywood celebs have eaten there too. Most places here aren't that expensive, but this place can charge that and be okay. People will still go there no matter what.

Plus if they're aging the beef, that's more cost.
And most steakhouses I've been to have been very expensively decorated, so there's lots of "ambience" in that bill.
And it's worth it, in my opinion. :-)

though was very fatty. And it usually is at this place. The environment is lodge-ish. Cedar wood everywhere. I like the environment. I knew it was expensive there and still went. But it just amazes me that meat is so expensive. And their prices continue to go up. :shrug:

it isn't worth it. There are places I refuse to pay $10 for a meal, and other places I could spend $50 on a meal and feel that I got my monies worth (If I'm feeling bourgeois). As I'm sure you know, you're not just paying for the price of the steak. So was the experience worth it? I gather not. Maybe find a place where it is?
Not exactly directed at you, just more in general: I'm so damn tired of this idea that because you CAN get something cheap, things that are priced higher are a rip off. I get that at work ALL THE TIME. Sure, you *can* find used books for $1 each, but we don't sell them. We provide a service: High quality, next-to-new used books with intelligent staff, a clean store, and proper shelving (to name a few things). If you want to dig through bargain bins to find your $1 copy of Danielle Steel, go ahead. But not here. It depends on what you're looking for and what you value.

This place is overrated. I've been several times. Every time I go, the prices have gone up. I don't notice any change though. The meat is never $50 quality, but I go b/c that is where my family enjoys going. I don't go a lot of the times we are invited. I just hate dropping over $100 for my husband and me to eat. I know you get what you pay for. I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the steak had gone up to $45.00. Mind you this doesn't include anything but the steak. All other food items are separate. :shrug:

(a steakhouse here). Except, it IS fantastic. $50 for just a steak and it's so good, just to DIE for. Service is excellent, atmosphere is fantastic. Worth it if you're a big steak fan and have the cash. But if it's not worth it for whatever reason, it's not worth it :) Maybe try some new places, see if you can get your family hooked on something else?

She's been going about 2 times a week for 15 years. She loves it. They know her. She gets her own table. She never has to make reservations. She gets the best service. We don't go as often as we are invited to go. We go maybe 2-3 times a year. I've tried suggesting other restaurants. Oh well! I just have to grin and bear it! :)

the fine restaurants outbid the grocery stores for fine steaks, so if you want a steak of that quality you have no option but to patronize the restaurant and pay the price
they make little profit on the steaks, the profit is in the beverage service
i can make a fine steakhouse meal at home but i have to do things w. marinades and other tricks because even the finest grocery store steak is just not the same quality
what do you do?
every year i receive a big box of omaha steaks as a gift and they are not of the same quality either, there doesn't seem to be a workaround for this
