What's the best restaurant in your city?
There are a lot of great restaurants here in DC, but my favorite is Teatro Goldoni (Venetian cuisine).

1. Supposedly, it's Charlie Trotter's here in Chicago
But that place is way, way, too pricey for me.

19. Been There. Our Take.
The food is incredible. Perfectly prepared and presented royally. But, like many restaurants of that type, the seating for small parties (there was just the two of us) is a common bench against the wall and a chair on the other side of the table. Here we were, dropping $220 for two people to eat, and the people at the next table were literally 24 inches away, on both sides. Thought that was a bring down.

We've also been to Le Francais when Banchet was still there. Even better than Trotter's. Seating was similar, but a little more spacing between the tables.

The best haut cuisine restaurant around here that we've been to, though, for the food, service, atmosphere and space, is Tallgrass in downtown Lockport. That's more Nouvelle though, then French. But, it is superb. It's also pricey.

There a little bistro down in Momence (yeah i'm from the boonies) called Dionne's. It's owned by a husband and wife. He's the chef, she's an artist, so the place is a combination haut cuisine restaurant and art gallery. Friendly service (!!!!!) and terrific food. A lot cheaper than the other places i mentioned. Probably down at $100 - $110 for two with drinks and wine.

Yeah i know; who cares what i think!

26. Thank you, Professor.
Well, *I* care about what you think. :-)

Maybe, some day, I'll be able to go to Charlie Trotter's. A co-worker described the experience, pretty much as yours...incredible presentation and preparation. He said expect to spend about $100 per person...with drinks. But apparently it is quite a unique experience.

I don't go out to the suburbs very much...but those choices sound interesting.

Maybe someday....

Amerigo's---Italian restuarant, but I just go there for their tiramisu (the absolute best)

Fratesi's---A small homestyle Italian restaurant

7. World class Bern's Steakhouse, Tampa, Florida
Boasting one of the largest wine collections on the planet, Bern's is the top notch eatery in town. Dinner for two is also easily going to cost you (wine and dessert not included) $120. I've eaten there 3 or 4 times over the years.

Granted, not my cup 'o tea anymore, but it's the answer to the question.

I live in the SF Bay Area. And even if you removed SF from the equation, you still have the Gourmet ghetto in Berkeley, Palo Alto (both University and California streets) San Jose Downtown, and all of the small neighborhood mexican spots here and there....

I couldn't even begin...

If you like to eat, SF Bay Area is your Mecca....

72. San Francisco and food
>If you like to eat, SF Bay Area is your Mecca....<

We were there a few years ago on DH's company's dime. There is NO bad food in San Francisco. Anywhere. He gets to go there almost every month, still on their dime. As a matter of fact, he's there today. (grrrRRRR!)

Have you ever been to Dottie's True Blue Cafe? It's around the corner from the Hotel Monaco in the theater district. Dottie's has about 10 tables, so you have to get there before it opens. They also serve the best breakfast I have ever eaten.

96. Cioppino!!! and Dim Sum and Bread!!! and Salads........
San Francisco is a city where bread and salads are at such a high level of art that people literally have bread dealers like some folks have dope dealers.

There are people in the Bay Area that bake 150 loaves of exquisite earth-oven, slow-rise, wood-fired bread that can only be had by word of mouth and an introduction. In SF I have had salads grown on foggy hillsides overlooking the Pacific that were the essence of fog and earth and green majesty.

If there is a universal religion in San Francisco it is food. There is food available there that cannot be had at any cost anywhere else in the world. The burritos alone are worth the four hour drive from Chico.

13. Several in the Twin Cities area that are superb
Murray's - it is a steakhouse...amazing steaks (and prices), Murray's is a downtown Minneapolis institution

Manny's Steakhouse - another downtown Minneapolis restaurant. They used to have a cigar night.

W.A.Frost - close to the State Capitol in St. Paul, this restaurant is a very eclectic and romantic place to eat.

Kincaid's - two locations - amazing food, very pricey, but they often have "coupons" believe it or not.

15. Our small town and Seattle
Our town: Duvall Cafe. During the day, it's breakfast and lunch with portion sizes so big you won't eat for the rest of the day. At dinner, they go gourmet. My favorites are the bruschetta (garden grown tomatoes, chevre and tapenade on the side,) and roast pork tenderloin with homemade applesauce and mashed potatoes. It's amazing.

If you're in Seattle, try the Metropolitan Grill. The food is tremendous, and it's fun to see the movers and shakers. If you'd like something quieter, try Daniel's Broiler (www.danielsbroiler.com). It's the "special occasion" restaurant at our house.

We've never actually made it to the Metropolitan Grill. Maybe I'll request it for my birthday in a few weeks.

On an entirely different note, my favorite cheap places in Seattle are Thai Tom (in the U-District) and El Puerco Lloron (on the stairclimb up to Pike Place Market).

The best restaurant close to my house (I live on the Eastside) is a new one: Pomegranate. They have wonderful seasonal menus and a nice, but casual atmosphere.

73. Do you like Italian food, lakemonster?
If you do (and you don't mind a drive,) try Nana Carmela's in Monroe. The owner and chef is a Staten Island native who uses all of his grandmother's recipes. He also imported one of the big pizza ovens from New York, as well as the vast majority of his ingredients. His pizza has spoiled us for everyone else's. You must have reservations, or you won't get a table.

Nana Carmela's got the big "thumbs up" from our New Jersey native pals when we took them there. It's like having dinner at Nana's house. Lots of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett playing, people talking and laughing, great friendly servers, and tremendous food. (Try the stuffed pork chops.)

Don't tell anyone ;-).

I also have to give nods to Philippe's The Original roast beef sandwiches, as well as Roscoes House Of Chicken And Waffles.

best cheap Chinese and Thai that I've had anywhere, same with Mexican, better than many much more expensive restuarants. Cuban, too.

I disagree with your "edible food" comment.

102. The Best Cheap Food in LA...
Yea, Pink's!
Try these;
For Japanese peasant food (no sushi ), can't remember the name but tiny shop on the NE corner of Vineland & Burbank in NoHo
Thai has got to be Samnalaung(?) on Hollywood about 3 blocks east of Western on south side of street
You have to go to New York for better Jewish Deli than Canter's on Fairfax (please don't try to say Greenblatt's is as good or better)
Mexican on the cheap try Rigo's tacos. It is a small chain (I think there's about 6 or 7 around, I usually went to one in Pacoima at Osbourne & Glennoaks)
Pizza & Pasta, the only place I've found that's even edible is Vitto's on Western across from LACC (don't fall for the Marcelli's scam, it's awful @ both places. Sauce out of a can, etc. Like many places it is living on it's reputation and has sucked for a long time )
Ya can't beat Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles (if you like that kind of food)
For the best southern cuisine outside of the south goto Johnny Reb's (2 locations)
Romantic interlude? Gotta go to the Japanese Tea Gardens in the Hollywood Hills, if she still doesn't love you after this, it ain't gonna happen.
Upscale and offbeat, goto the Stinking Rose in Beverly Hills (& San Francisco)
Steak? Get a ticket to the Mid-West cause there ain't nothing edible in LA & I don't care how much you spend, even the Ruth's Chris sucks.
Seafood if you can't get to the East Coast can be found in King Harbor (Redondo Beach, can't remember the name) and Maxine's in Port (I'm not even going to try to spell Y-knee-me) in ventura county. Seafood Shop/Cafeteria style and picnic seating at both places. BTW, if you're used to the seafood on the East Coast, there is nothing good on the West Coast.

Every time I fly out of LAX, I try to make it a point to stop there on my way back!

For Mexican, my personal favorite is El Cholo which has two locations - one in Santa Monica (on Wilshire, past the end of I-10) and one in La Habra (off Imperial).

Not a fan of the upscale places, but that's mainly because I lack the funds to be able to eat at those places.

107. I am of the Cesspool era
when the Eat and Drink Castle produced the Gyro "Extra Extra" - the stinkiest sandwich ever made

When the Local Korean BBQ place was emptied out at lunch once by about a dozen rats

When a McDonald's employee give a number of people Typhus

When you could get stinking drunk at the Quarry House and get a great Burger - oh wait, you can STILL do that......

When you could get the seafood they didn't sell at Crisfields the next day at Captain White's - oh and get your leg peed on by Johnson, the one-eyed drunk

Where, when it was quiet, you could hear gunshots from the Shepard's Park area.

When Shepard Park was the nastiest strip joint you had ever seen.....

When you could smell the odor of baking Cinnamon Buns from the Giant Food bakery - and on some days, mingled with the odd Barbecue Smell of the Crematorium on Gist Avenue.

I used to live at 825 Gist Avenue, about three blocks from the Takoma Park border. Silver Spring of the 80s and 90s was a very interesting place.....

What I like best about Galileo is that they have a really cheap front bar menu that is an incredible value. I'd love to eat in the Laboratorio someday!

...my favs are:

1. Jose Tejas (Woodbridge, NJ)
CHEAP TexMex with great variety (vegetarian menu too)
...Great bar too

2. "The Grease Trucks" (Rutgers Parking Lot, New Brunswick, NJ)
If you could pile anything you could think of (mozz sticks, fries, etc) on a cheese steak and have it named after you... You'd be at the Grease Trucks!

3. Surf Taco (Point Pleasant, NJ)
I guess I'm partial to texmex, but this is another great place to eat! Cheap and good variety.

4. The Windmill (Long Branch (West End), NJ)
The original foot long hotdog place... The building is one block from the beach and it's actually in the shape of a windmill... open till 3AM for all the drunkards to sober up at.

5. Mahogany Grille (Manasquan, NJ)
A nice new addition to the shore... Excellent deserts!! (too pricey for me most of the time though)

the best I've been to:

The Piper Pub (excellent pub grub, beautiful city view, great selection of beers)
The Ram (fantastic burgers and desserts, wonderful beer brewed onsite)
Murphy's (steaks and seafood)

My husband wants to take me to the Manhattan Grill. He has been there, but I have not. He'd actually be a better person to ask about restaurant quality. He's probably been to every restaurant in town.

It is a European-style bistro with great cuisine and a terrific atmosphere.

But nobody's ever heard of Puyallup, so I'll tell you the best restaurant in the nearest large town, Tacoma. And the winner is: Stanley and Seafort's; it's an upscale steak and seafood place on a hill overlooking the Port of Tacoma and Commencement Bay.

My favorite dish of theirs is the roast of lamb with asparagus and a savory sauce. A whiskey sour before dinner, a nice strong red wine with dinner, and coffee and a potted brownie for dessert. Good eatin'! :9

There's always a line to get a table. Once you et in you can peruse the head-shots on the wall all around the interior. Many local sports and TV celebrities as well as big name stars.

Both vegetarian. Mr. Naturals does creative Mexican food with lots of sauces and flavors, plus incredible baked goods. Mother's is more traditional vegetarian fair, with a mushroom stroganoff worth the drive.

I also love Madras Pavillion, a vegetarian Southern Indian cuisine, but they've got restaurants in at least three cities, so that almost seems like a chain.

100. The Rattlesnake Club in Detroit
I had filet mignon when I went there a couple of years ago for X-mas lunch. It was so perfectly done that it melted in my mouth. I also had a side dish of garlic mashed potatoes and three kinds of steak sauce to choose from.

The Whitney is also really good. Both places are very expensive and I have only been to them for lunch, because I can't afford to eat dinner there.

On the lower price scale-Roma Cafe in the Eastern Market is the best italian food in town. The local Andiamo chain is second place to them. I'm not a Mario's fan, but lots of people like their food.

There are plenty of the best middle eastern restaurants around. La Shish is a good local chain of restaurants-I've eaten in several of their locations and the food quality is consistent at all. Their garlic sauce is excellent.
