WTF? The Rose Bowl is on TONIGHT? Isn't supposed to be Jan. 1? |
|
Or Jan. 2 if Jan. 1 is a Sunday? And isn't supposed to be an early afternoon game?
What the hell happened this year? And why was it not advertised that the Rose Bowl is tonight?

the Rose parade was on Monday morning while many people were back to work and children back to school. I was watching the parade and there were school closings (it was icy) on the tagline running across the bottom of the screen. It was bizarre.

12. And what does that mean? Isn't it always the granddaddy of bowl games? |
|
The big kahuna, so to speak?
College sports fucking elude me with their regions and divisions and classes and areas and playoffs and on and on and on and on. Especially now that corporations seem to own all the bowls, and that there are enough bowl games to ensure that every college team gets into at least one...

15. Well...it's traditionally one of the biggest. |
|
However the BIG, EL GRAN, CHIGON game rotates amongst the Rose, Fiesta, Orange and Sugar bowls. This year is the Rose Bowl's turn to host the game of games.

5. No more -One big day of bowl games |
|
Last week there were games in the late afternoon (Happy Hour) and at night (DUI time)
They took a bit of a break over the weekend-lame games and the NFL and then Monday night was Ohio State vs. Notre Dame (OSU won) in the Fiesta Tostitos Bowl-yes apparently they do sell that many.
Last night was the FedEx Sugar Bowl in which Penn State beat Florida State in triple overtime.
Now tonight it is the University of Spoiled Children vs. The University of the Republic of Austin in an all liberal bowl.

11. Okay, now another question: Is USC always in the Rose Bowl? |
|
Is that the hook, that it's always the best non-California team versus USC? Or maybe UCLA? one of those two.

13. Classically, the Rose Bowl is a matchup between |
|
the best PAC 10 team and the best BIG TEN team. Except when the BCS screws it up and makes it the "national championship"

I thought it was always always on the 1st regardless. I haven't heard why they changed it.

20. it's never on a Sunday |
|
so it doesn't compete with the NFL. And then the BCS spreads out the four BCS games over three days, starting on the 1st, or the 2nd, if the first is a Sunday, to increase viewership.

First of all Welcome to DU :hi:
Okay the BCS was set up a few years ago. THE ONE championship game (they hope) revolves between three bowls-the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, and the Fiesta Bowl on and the Orange Bowl make that 4 bowls. Every four years one of them hosts it.
The years that, say the Rose Bowl, doesn't host THE championship game it gets one of the games between two of the other BCS teams (there are 8 total) so last year Michigan played Texas in the Rose bowl.
Historically the Rose bowl was between the PAC10 and the BIG10 championships-an agreement settled on when the Rose bowl and those conferences were just SURE that the national championship game would always involve a team from one of those conferences. Truth be told the Rose bowl basically was between the winners of the USC vs.UCLA and MIchigan vs. Ohio State with an upstart team working their way in from time to time. The Sugar Bowl and then the Orange Bowl quickly became better games and more often were seen as THE championship game. This is the closest they have come to have A championship game without having a tournament.

16. And for good measure, they start a 4 hour game at 8:30 PM EST, |
|
so even at best it won't be over until after midnight.
Fucking brilliant.
