Would you consider a Deist more of an Agnostic, or a person of faith?
Just wondering....since as a deist I tend to find common ground on both sides, agnostic, athiest and people of faith.

4. I'm a Christian, and no Deist, but I think a Deist could have faith
in God, but like an agnostic, deny God's active participation in human affairs. Hefferson was a Christian Deist.

5. Faith
Deism is, after all, a belief in an unnamed spiritual being. Agnosticism doesn't rule out that possibility, but neither does it rule out all of us being controlled by three-breasted aliens from the planet Amazonia.

7. A Deist by very definition is NOT a person of faith
At least not faith as defined by most churches. A principle cornerstone of deism is a refusal to base one's opinion on blind faith. A deist may believe that there is some sort of "god" but not in the usual sense of a sentient, omnipotent Creator - it tends to be viewed more as an aspect of nature, a natural phenomenon rather than some dude in white robes.

Deists reject the idea of any sort of messiah, a messenger from some "god" being who reveals "the truth" which is a part of most organized religions.

http://www.deism.com/deism_defined.htm

Some interesting info here. Such as a definition of a deist - "One who believes in the existence of a God or supreme being but denies revealed religion, basing his belief on the light of nature and reason."

8. definitions help
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 04:34 PM by CarpeDiebold
agnostic is someone who says i don't know whether there's a god or not, but i don't care because it's unanswerable.

a deist is someone who believes that god created the universe but doesn't interfere.

so by definition, a deist is somone who believes in god and can't be an agnostic. i think...i'm not a philosopher.

*edit* i guess i had the definition of deist wrong, per above post. still i think there's a distinction...
