We start Sex Ed. in a week. |
|
Good. God.
Lord. Save. Me.
If I see one more.... *Twitchtwitch*
And, this year, I don't know WHAT we're learning about... but if we start where the last video left off.... good gravy. I do NOT want to learn about masturbation!
Oy.
Oh, and does this qualify as a sex thread? If it does, I'll delete it. I just thought you all would share my pain...
Oy....
But then again, I could practically teach that class....

We had to demand one in my high school. And even then it was just one class with a quick discussion of various types of birth control.

Enjoy them for what they are, but realize that when you get hit with "it," it's a completely different animal.
I know, because I suffered through some of those same film strips.

You could have a lot of fun with this, you know. Um, maybe I should re-word that.
When I was a kid, we had to learn that on our own... and run the risk of going blind. (or was that from soap poisoning?)

But my parents used blindness for anything and everything that you could possibly do wrong(lying, cheating, stealing, dishonoring your parents, swearing,fighting-nothing was safe from striking you down suddenly with blindness. And then everyone would know that you were a bad person).
And we all know about hairy palms.

10. I went to a rather conservative school |
|
To make things worse, our class was taught by a good Catholic man of around 25 who was single who turned red everytime he lectured on stuff that we were supposed to learn in class. As a result, most of our learning of that unit involved readong the text book and taking quizzes and a couple of videos. WE mostly learned about basic reproductive anatomy and all the STDs that one could get. We were not taught about condomns or any form of birth control. I heard from friends in the class taught by the other teacher, a middle aged married woman, that the class was actually helpful and she did answer any practicle questions that students had about sex or birth control.

|
For one of the questions that my friend asked the teacher and that I asked my microbiology professor and a couple doctors and consulted websites about. It has to do with the transmission of an STD that isn't always an STD. That sort of thing is useful as teens begin experiementing sexually whether at the time or in the future. Personally, I went to the public library and read everything I could on the subject. I was always embarassed about it though. I'd always have other books with me when reading about sex and pretend like I was reading another book while hiding the sex book anytime anyone walked by close enough to see what I was reading.

When I was in High school (graduated 10 years ago) they tought us the works. Complete with a lesson on how to put on a condom using a wooden dick and all.
AndI went to a private school once operated by Brothers (Catholics).
But I think Canada is a lot more open that the U.S. on the subject.

43. That got me through most of high school |
|
During the classes that were teaching things I already knew, I managed to write a novel. It was a terrible novel, granted, but it got me through the tedious parts. Several of my friends were doing the same thing, and we'd share our writing during the lunch period. It makes the teachers less angry than, for example, falling asleep ;-)

23. Well, young lady, when I was in high school (more than 35 years |
|
ago), sex ed consisted of the Health teacher (who was also the Track coach, and didn't mind us smoking Marlboros as long as he couldn't see us do it) telling us: "Keep it in your pants. And if you can't, don't go where it's wet without a raincoat."
Charming, yes? But that's the way it was in the 1960s. Damn, I'm old.

|
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 11:40 PM by ocelot
consisted of sending the boys and girls to two different classrooms. The girls saw a filmstrip having to do, vaguely, with periods. It was so cryptic we couldn't really figure out what it was about, except that our bodies were changing and we would have to get something called Kotex. That was the full extent of my public school sex ed.

41. Consider yourself lucky |
|
I never had any real sex-ed in school. I got the menstruation spiel, as well as a briefing on male and female anatomy but that was it. Nothing about sex, birth control, masturbation, STDs ,etc. My mother's contribution was a pamphlet with all references she didn't approve of (e.g., everything about sex and masturbation) crossed out with a thick black magic marker. Fortunately I was a precocious youngster with a library card and the skills to use it well. I read up on the subject and knew more about it at 13 than many college students.
As to masturbation, I'd been doing that since I was around 7, so I didn't really need to be taught that.

Learning about masturbation is an incredibly important thing for women. Ya know how many women have never had an orgasm? A frightening number.
For both men and women - how can you tell your SO how you like to be touched if you don't know?
Actuaully some of the films can be very beautiful. And useful. When I fell in love with a paralyzed VietNam vet I was incredibly grateful for those films. Alhough he taught me more about making love than any film could. But at least I had seen disabled people making love, so I had a starting point.
You are very lucky to have a comprehensive sex education. It's a dieing breed.
Khash.

51. I took a small group of high school photography |
|
students down to the Pearl district in downtown Portland one day. We were walking past a whole block of small art galleries when this strange art piece in the window caught my eye. It was a rainbow of small different colored gems originating from one of the walls of the small window front exhibit. I followed the stream of gems across the floor, up the wall to this thing made of this silly putty looking material. I must have stared at it for 30 seconds or so before I realized it was a very life-like looking vagina that had these gems flowing from it.
Several of the students, including a few very cute young ladies started staring at it....one of the kids said "what is that?". About that time they all started to laugh. One of the boys said "I know what that is." One of the more vocal girls said "how do you know what that is?" Just about all of the kids started blushing, and we all had a good laugh.
Sex-ed at it's finest...
