They make us all feel like we are doing something when we are really aren't.
Not that some people don't achieve good things through the Internet, just that often we wind up defusing our energy on sites like this rather than grabbing pitchforks. That was the point of the original comment--that religion made people feel better about their lives, so they stayed publicly peaceful.

3. I'd put that in the opinions category |
|
As a freshman in college, I once claimed that granting the people free speech was an elaborate ruse to get us to talk about things that don't matter. If something were really important, no ban would keep people quiet

15. Ah, we're thinking along the same lines, then |
|
I didn't understand why you included opinions, but you're right, that's exactly the point I was getting at.
Free speech zones are even better. We are allowed to say what we want in certain areas, so as not to disturb the people we are criticizing. Yippee, we got to carry a plaquard and take a picture to show all our buddies. We really told them! Now let's watch the Rose Bowl and feel like activists. (Not trying to criticize anyone for carrying signs or watching the Rose Bowl--it was a great game--just pointing out that it usually does no harm to the officials in charge.)

2. All these opiates are intertwined. |
|
example: it's the entertainment industry, and its advertisers, which tell us which consumer goods will bring us happiness.
And it's Michael Franti who called television "the drug of the nation".

5. The TV is the new Village Square. |
|
But unfortunately it's not interactive.
Oh, unless you're voting "in" or "out" an American Idol.
TV sucks.
