At least one source thinks Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes will never wed.

The buzz is that the engagement of the happy couple has hit a few bumps and, after reportedly tense holidays spent at Holmes’ house, wedding plans may have been put on hold.

With a new year beginning, Cruise “decided to take the opportunity to mend fences with the family of his fiancée, Katie Holmes,” according to the upcoming issue of Life & Style Weekly. It didn’t go so well.

“Tom and Katie ended up leaving — three days earlier than planned,” according to a “close friend” of Cruise. “Katie was in tears, but that’s standard when it comes to dealing with family matters and Tom.”

A spokesman for Cruise denies the story, but there have been previous reports that Holmes’ lawyer father is not thrilled with the prospects of the two getting hitched. “My honest opinion is that the wedding’s not going to happen,” a “friend of the couple” told the mag. “Neither one of them seems as enthusiastic as they once did about marriage.”

2. It's the eternal "does the family's opinion matter" question...

...and her family does not want this to happen. When Cruise was married to Nicole Kidman, he had a relatively shrewd publicist who was not his sister. That person kept the "crazy Xenu Tom" persona out of the public eye. Now that we've all seen the couch jumper and the wild-eyed "Matt, Matt...you're glib dweeb, that will be the picture painted by the media for the rest of Katie's life (her life with Cruise, that is). I don't believe he can go back to being a guy who is not that guy now that we've witnessed his series of meltdowns.

She's too young for that, but she's also an adult. If she wants to give up her career and throw herself into that world, its her business. But I do think of her parents, and even though they should not cast the deciding vote on how she lives her life, I try to imagine being a parent and getting Crazy Tom for a son-in-law. I wouldn't be thrilled.

I think Katie sees what a controlling little shit this guy is. Any man who would drop $70,000 on an Ultrasound Machine to monitor his girlfriend's pregnancy is a micromanager on a scale never before seen in this country. Even before the ultrasound machine came into her life, he was dictating what she wore, when she went to bed and how long she could stay there, her movements when away from the house, everything. You're not under THAT much control in prison.

And really, what does Tom Cruise have to recommend him over other men? Nothing, really. He's a millionaire, but the entertainment business has no shortage of millionaires. He's famous, but that's not unique. He's not overwhelmingly attractive. If you asked 100,000 little girls to describe their dream man without naming names, none of those "dream men" would look anything like Tom Cruise. "Short men who believe in aliens and who revisit the same role in movie after movie" don't walk down the aisle with the fairy princess.

My predicted endgame: after her Dianetics birthing ordeal, in which she's got to deliver the baby in silence because her screaming might harm the child's agenda, she's going to deposit little Tommy in Mr. Cruise's arms, tell him "this is yours," pack her shit and call a cab.
