Was there a point to the Godfather 3?
Seriously, the first two were great. I loved them (and Robert DeNiro was a hottie back in the day). I just didn't see what the 3rd one accomplished.

I just watched the 3rd one for the first time, so that is why I am wondering.

1. I think the torch had to be passed to a new generation
and that's what occurred in GF3.

2. Yeah, I guess, but to me it just was pointless other than that.

3. It proved that Sofia Coppola, as an actress, is a terrific director.
Beyond that, not much of a point, IMO.

7. That was her acting debut.
I don't think she's acted in anything since then. Francis Ford Coppola directed "Godfather 3"

8. well, not really
technically, it was her second time on film.

She played Connie and Carlos' newborn son in the original Godfather -- the child who was being baptized while Michael was rubbing out all of his enemies.

Ahhh, really?
I guess she didn't have to act too hard for that part. :)

11. I thought she had a cameo in "The Outsiders" as well?
at the Dairy Queen, iirc??

But anyways, seeing her whiny nasal ass getting shot in the end is reason alone to slog through the movie

19. Her daddy made her be in it after Winona Ryder dropped out
at the last minute. Personally, I think she did a GREAT job for someone who had never acted before, and an okay job over all. She was just being measured against Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, etc. However, I honestly think she's better overall than Bridget Fonda. Who is not even a good director!

32. I saw Godfather 3 on a transcontinental flight
coming back to the US after living in the UK for several months. I rightly decided not to "rent" the earphones to hear the dialogue. I can safely say it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

And I thank Allah that Sophia Coppola decided to go into directing instead of acting.

The audience burst out laughing when Michael keeled over at the end.

17. I think the point was to wrap up
Michael's life and to show how in the end the mob destroyed him and his family. I also thought the movie was poor compared to the firt two, which were very good.

18. He really wanted to pass the "Don" title on to his son, but his
son was like him in the beginning. He wanted nothing to do with that lifestyle.

22. If you can't be arsed to read (& don't particularly mind about facts)
it's an introduction to the whole Banco Ambrosiano affair.

Other than that, it stops my Godfather boxset looking like it's got something missing.

27. Yes. That Winona Rider's bad decision affects all of us
She was slated to play the Sofia Coppola role. Sofia only did it because her dad couldn't find anyone else who knew the lines on such short notice. Sofia had stood in for Winona when she was a constant no show.

29. The movie has a point even though it sucked ass
In GFI, Vito says something along the lines of "a true man always spends time with his family" Also, mike tells Kay that being in charge of the family is like being a senator or anyone who is responsible for the well being of a group.

In GFII Mike becomes concerned that he is losing his family (breaking up with Kay, planning to kill his brother, conflict with his sister whom he had made a widow), but his mom says "But you can never lose your family. Never."

GFIII shows that that his mom's claim was wrong. In his desire to keep the family secure mike has done huge amounts of harm to it. He feels guilt over his brother's death, his sister has been warped by anger, he finally loses even his own daughter (and thus the possible reconstruction of his nuclear family) and dies a lonely old man. Mike's whole career had been about protecting the family and in the end he had none.

That having been said, the 3rd movie suffered greatly because a lot of the interesting characters from I and II were dead by the time III took place and the minor characters who had risen to prominence (daughter, vincent, connie (although she seemed ok in II) were not played by good actors and were never suitably developed

30. One more thing. The actual plot of GFIII feels fake
The whole "we gotta save the pope" thing was cheesy beyond belief. I think that there could have been a better way to advance the character development than the plot that we saw
